Obama signs a law protecting women. Say it aint so.
Edited on Tue Dec-22-09 09:41 PM by TheBigotBasher
In news that is not health insurance but IS HEALTH CARE, President Obama signed Senator Al Franken’s Anti-Rape Amendment into law.

The same Republicans that some kill the bill suppoerters are now siding with claimed it was an unnecessary attack on their allies in the military.

So where were the likes of "disappointed" go to people like Amy Siskind and her faux "New Agenda" (read Sarah Agenda)? Yep. Silent.

Once again President Obama does something that silences Puma bigots. Stupid Pumas….

A great future Senate Leader.

2. Franken deserves the credit for this.
Was there ever any chance Obama wouldn't sign it?

13. So, congress gets credit for the good bills and Obama the blame for the bad?
I think we should give credit and blame a little more equally here in both situations.

5. Not to be picky, but . . . okay to be picky. . .
it is to protect anyone, not just women. Just because we all behave less outraged, and less caring, about men being raped, it does happen, and it's just as horrendous. Perhaps now that a man can see some outcome besides just humiliation, they will feel more confident about coming forward with their rapes. But then I see OP titles like this and . . . oh never mind.

7. It's not just rape.
It basically voids binding arbitration in certain classes of contracts that would cover some crimes. (Whether this affects the rights to a criminal or civil trial, I don't know.)

Look at it this way--in Houston if you sign a lease you waive your rights to certain types of lawsuits and agree to binding arbitration. It's a voluntary--albeit sometimes with a bit of compulsion, if it's the standard lease agreement everywhere and you can't afford to buy. Similarly, a number of union contracts call for binding arbitration in the event of certain types of disputes. It keeps the legal fees down, and it's usually faster than lawsuits.

Similarly, some employees signed contracts in which they agreed to binding arbitration in the event--only overseas, I think--that they're subject to assault or other crimes. Among them, rape.
