Check, and mate.

Good chess play is never appreciated by people who don't understand basic strategy. I've played against many people who play chess without thinking several moves ahead, and they're pushovers from the first move, just like the GOP. Thank gawd the President and our Democratic leaders understand this.

We won, despite 100% GOP and CORPORATE opposition. It is a truly stunning achievement by any measure.

I'm guessing this post will be unrecced into oblivion and trashed by the Hamsherites, and you know what? I don't care, because you won too. You just don't know it yet because you have put your faith in people who have been lying to you for money. I'll give you some leeway to let the reality sink in.

Congratulations Democrats and President Obama, you make me proud to be a Democrat. Thank you for this historic legislation.

32. Choice is what you get when the insurance cos can't reject you...
because of a pre-existing condition. If you don't like your present coverage, just switch to some one else. They gotta take you.
Further, because the policies are standardized, (See gold, silver, etc.) they can't offer a policy to some people but not others and must meet the minimum requirements as outlined by the Feds. Sure the government isn't going to be in the health insurance business anymore than they are now, but that doesn't make this a status quo situation. I'd like single payer too, but as long as American kids in school are brainwashed about freedom and liberty etc. we're not going to get it.

The plan also has provisions for changing from "pay for services" to "outcome based incentives" and also takes away copays for preventative procedures, both of which everyone agrees will have a dramatic impact on cost reduction.

29. Really... you are so uninformed it's almost not worth explaining things to you...

The House bill has language that says that health care plans won't pay for abortions.

The Senate bill does not.

The final bill, which will come out of conference committee, hasn't been written yet. We don't know whether they'll take the House or Senate language on abortion.

What is being voted on in the Senate tomorrow has no limitations with respect to abortion.

In either case... access to abortion is not being curtailed... only payment for it - if the House bill prevails.

It means that abortions would be paid out of pocket, not covered. And that is ONLY if the House bill wins out in this area.

36. I hate to tell you this...
Others outside the Senate, though, say the language could limit abortion coverage as much as Stupak-Pitts. Anyone who selects a plan that includes abortion coverage would have to pay two separate premiums -- even single men or older women, who would not need abortion coverage. Abortion rights supporters suggest that would prompt frustration and, in turn, reduce demand for such plans. Eventually, they argue, insurers may decide not to offer abortion coverage at all.

"The absurdity of requiring these two separate checks doesn't accomplish anything toward the supposed goal of segregating federal funds," said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "It just creates additional hoops for insurance companies...and more administrative burdens and obstacles for women to get the coverage they need."

20. What have we "won" exactly?
Sure, there's the ban on preexisting conditions and lifetime caps, that's a positive. Yet it is seriously outweighed by the fact that we've just handed the insurance industry a mandated monopoly. We're going to be paying for this victory for years and decades, as will your children and grandchildren. Are you ready to pay out over a quarter of your income in insurance premiums?

Not to mention that this "victory" comes on the back of half the population in this country. Women are going to have their right to choose severely restricted. Nice that you think of this sort of narrowing of women's rights a "win", most people generally consider it a loss.

Hopefully this will be the last win like this one, because frankly we can't afford another one.

24. You do realize this wasn't a game, don't you?
Obama may have won the day by getting his bill passed but the American people have lost by being saddled with a bill that does little more than obligate people to buy unregulated insurance with little hope of being able to actually use it.

What happens from this point:

1. 30 million people are forced to purchase health care they either will not be able to afford or afford to use after copays and deductables.

2. Millions of middle and working class families will be burdened with new taxes to pay for this insurance in the form of a tax on their employer provided coverage.

3. Insurance companies will still have very little oversight or reason not to take exorbitant salaries and bonuses.

4. Many state governments will use this as a back door to effectively banning reproductive rights for women.

5. Gay and Lesbian couples will still be penalized by having to pay as single members instead of receiving family rates.

That does not make a win for us in this game of three dimensional chess you're whooping about. It's just another tax without benefit to the vast majority.

Politics is not chess. It's more like a combination of Poker, Calvinball, Pit, and basic negotiation.

CHC is a consolation prize (particularly at the comparably minute rate it is being funded) It is a "We're sorry we lost your reservations but here are some crumbs for you off the table."

What the majority of Americans could now be saddled with is being strapped to a for profit ambulance going off of a bridge into an icy river. There is almost nothing to control prices of insurance or cost of healthcare here.

28. Bernie Sanders worked his butt off to lead on this
and you are giving Obama credit for it? :wtf:

Obama had absolutely nothing to do with leading on this development. Sanders did this. Sanders did all the legwork and the pushing to put this into the bill to make it less crappy. He deserves all the credit for this.

This, unfortunately, won't help people who don't live near any of these community health centers. That means people in a lot of big rural areas are mostly screwed. :(

But this is the first significant step forward that we've seen so far. The only reason this health care bill now has any significant expansion of health care provisions is because Bernie Sanders has the foresight and political skills that Obama lacks. Give credit where credit is due.

People attack Obama when they don't like the bill. But when they do like parts of the bill, they claim it was because of other people that those things got included and not because of Obama.

and don't just look for opportunities to slobber kisses on Obama for what other people are doing.

If Obama was doing something worthy of Kudos he's get them, but he has been acting politically cowardly and ineffectual. He hasn't done a damned thing worthy of praise during these negotiations.

Laugh all you want, but you're just showing that you really don't care who is doing the real work. You just want to give Obama all the credit, but of course none of the responsibility. :eyes:

63. I give credit to Sanders also and the other reliably progressive Senators who did the same
I would add that beyond the community health centers, the expansion of Medicaid is an unequivocally good thing and probably a big part of the motivation of the most liberal Senators who have continued to support the health care bill.

But I'm not ready to see this as brilliant strategy or chess playing by Obama --someday, maybe we will find out from some Woodward book that it was, but it sure doesn't look like it from here.

68. I don't agree about expanding Medicaid. Nobody accepts it.
I've been on medicaid, and I searched for over a year and could not find a single specialist I needed IN NEW YORK Friggin CITY that would accept it and was taking new patients. This problem finding doctors who will accept medicaid is horrible in every city, and impossible in rural areas.

The Medicaid reimbursement rates are known to be far too low, and their rules are geared towards reimbursing hospitals, not doctors. So doctors only break even if they get paid through hospitals.

It is not a system that they will work well. Expanding Medicaid as a substitute for Medicare is doomed to failure from the very start, and that is exactly why they are willing to allow it. They know that this is a purely symbolic gesture to calm people down and fool people into thinking that they are making progress when actually they aren't.

Don't take the medicaid expansion seriously. It's a sham, and a PR move.

the states COULD do. It does not require it. So, there are still states that won't offer the coverage to people who don't already have it anyhow.

Politicians attempt to gut that hated Social Security at the expense of their political career.

This will be another 'third rail' for politicians.

As another poster noted, in five years any progressive who is currently against this bill will conveniently forget that they ever took that position.

45. This is either satire- or
Rather impressive fail.

Assuming the latter:

If you knew he first thing about chess- and how to look several moves forward you certainly haven't demonstrated one lick of that skill in this post (though you have managed to pigeonhole folks with juvenile name calling).

Had you an ounce of political insight, you'd recognize that by failing to use reconciliation- and by failing to stand up and fight for responsible reform, choosing instead to appease the likes of Lieberman and Nelson, et al., the board has been set up for every two bit corrupt extortionist in the Senate to push their corporate backer's agendas at every turn down the line.

This will further divide the party, result in more failed reforms and ineffective half measures, while feeding and reinforcing the public perception that Democrats are:

As corrupt and complicit as Republicans; or

Are too weak and inept to get er' done right in a way that demonstrably helps ordinary Americans and Main Street.

Either perception cedes the populist resentment, anger and anxiety back to Republicans- who've coopted it so many times before, knowing full well that it's what drives public policy in America.

I don't know how they would have withstood the massive migration of 170 million americans onto medicare in the next two decades. Given the birth rate their businesses would be substantially reduced both financially and politically. Oh the horror.

And giving up our only bargaining chip, the mandate, brilliant move.

we were played by the GOP and the Corporations and did their exact bidding while they sat back and opposed it...now the Democrats will get all the blame for filling the coffers of the insurance industry and shoving the mandate down our throats, while the Pubes get to claim clean hands...reminds me of the Bugs Bunny cartoon when he was arguing "safe/out" with the umpire...eventually he turned it on it's head and had the umpire calling him safe...truly amazing how incompetent our supposed leaders have become.

But more seriously, it's really too bad that you want Obama to fail so much that you're so happy to think that those who DON'T want him to fail have nothing but chess analogies. Which is not true, but even you probably know that.
