Regarding siglines and unreccers
Would it be possible to re-format the part of the "Edit My Profile" page (under "Options") so make it easier to put in a sigline?

Point 1) If a sigline is limited to 400 characters, why isn't the text box limited to 400 characters? It's a bit irritating to put a sigline, then have to go back and edit and edit and edit until it passes the magic ≤400 mark.

Point 2) Could the text box be an actual box instead of a line? Big enough to show all 400 characters at once? There's plenty of unused room on the page, after all.

Regarding the unreccers out there... in light of the front-page story ( http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x9542227 ) is there anything you can do to seek out and destroy the usernames that such people might be using?

Naturally, you want your internal process to be secret so the RW unreccers have a hard time working around the filters or whatever. But it would seem to me that establishing a correlation between a member's ratio of recs to unrecs and/or unrecs with an IP address would be one way to go. Also, members that do a lot of reccing and unreccing might be worth looking at. It would be possible for them to rec a lot of silly stuff and unrec the real stories so their ratio looks acceptable.

1. Answers:
1) We could do this.

2) The purpose of the single line is so people don't put in a bunch of "returns" and screw it up.

3) We pay close attention to who is using our rec/unrec system, and how. Sometimes we do catch trolls this way. But the reality is that the vast, vast majority of people who use the system are doing so legitimately. The number of trolls is so minuscule that they are not able to impact the outcome.

FWIW, I fail to see the connection between what happens on Digg and what happens on DU. They may be able to bury stories at Digg, but that doesn't give them any control over what happens here.

2. Thank, Skinner
My thinking was that if they'll set up a system to do it on Digg, expanding it to other sites (YouTube, DU) that do recs/unrecs/thumbs-up/thumbs-down isn't much of a stretch.

Glad you guys are keeping an eye on things.
