While this is good news I don't really agree with true celebration...
Maybe it's just because I have a life long distaste for strong patriotism, no mater the direction it is coming from. Or maybe it's because I don't really like celebrating anyone's death in general (though I agree this would be an exception). I don't know why but while I do think this is good news I don't feel any conection with those who feel like partying.

3. Agreed. There was a General on Al-Jazzera who while he thought this was a good thing
it wasn't for gloating or flag waving. And that the people at the White House were just "kids trying to make a night out of it."

He's a murderous thug, but this is kind of disgusting.

And I agree with the other DUer in this thread about the trial.

14. Not only is the smug celebrating disgusting, but it sends a message to the world.
I'm already seeing the disgust by Brits on another forum. They think the Yanks out in front of the White House are in poor taste.

Some people think that things happened in a vacuum. I don't see anyone flying planes into buildings in Belgium. I have always had a hatred for the blindness that so many have regarding this national tragedy. As if we had nothing to do with it. We had everything to do with it.

50. The British think THAT'S in poor taste?
Where was their distaste about the American media fawning all over their stupid royal wedding, when hundreds of people here had been killed by violent tornadoes?

BTW, "we" had nothing to do with 9/11. Innocent people were killed, people who did nothing to harm anyone in Al Qaeda. It's disgusting to use the word "we", as if the people killed on 9/11 brought it on themselves.

These are the kind of statements that give us Democrats a bad name. Osama bin Laden and his ilk are the only ones to blame. You don't kill innocent people just because you have a problem with a government.

And by the way, we are not "Yanks"--we're AMERICANS. I don't apologize for being American or being patriotic. I love my country, which is why I hate what Bush did, and the current Republicans are doing, to our nation.

53. I don't want to argue.
But I recall a documentary on LinkTV that mentioned how Osama got the idea of flying planes into a building when he saw a US made missile flying into one of the buildings over in the Middle East. We were killing innocent people in another country because we had a problem with their government's nonexistent wmd's wanted oil.

Don't get me wrong. I am definitely glad we got that bastard and that we should feed the body to wild dogs. It is hard to dance in the streets after that shitbag embarrassed us for 10 years though....and that was plenty if time for his cancer to metastasize to the rest of the world. This is great news, but only symbolic. VE day, on the other hand was the absolute conclusion of a horrible time in history - I can imagine dancing in the streets for that.

Maybe there's captured evidence or tapes that will fill in a lot of the missing details of OBL and his role in 9/11. I doubt that we'll see any pics, though. Apparently he took a head shot.

or any killing (I cannot celebrate war). I find jingoism to be a vile celebration of "relative" superiority. Still, I have no sympathy for Mr. Bin Laden. I have no sympathy for any oppressor. Oppressors of any kind from any Religion or otherwise. I accept that the world is highly flawed. Still I do not have to show any kindness to ANY oppressor, including Mr. Bin Laden. He was a horrible piece of reactionary s**t. The "Christian" fundamentalists are rightfully condemned around here. Be consistent, Mr. Bin Laden has the same beliefs.
