Did you realize our Section 8 program is in shambles?

I would cut and paste some snips from the article but the site won't let me right click on it so you need to click on the link.

1. No problem here
Christmas came early this year for Shirley Gipson. After nearly a decade on the waiting list for a Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher, her name finally came up.

“It’s the best Christmas present I can get. I’m just so thankful it finally happened,” she said.

She’s one of just a handful of people throughout the Twin Cities who receive one of the coveted vouchers each year that allow them to rent anywhere in the private market that will accept the vouchers.

2. I had a box come up that said "You are not allowed to right click on this page"
You didn't get that?

Are you using Internet Exposer?

If so, stop. Now.

5. I copied and pasted a bit. You must have been up late.
All they want for Christmas is a Section 8 Voucher

The need for affordable housing locally continues to grow as rent increases continue to outpace wages. According to the Minnesota Housing Partnership’s 2010 County Profiles, nearly 79,000 Twin Cities households earning less than $20,000 pay more than they can afford on rent.

St. Paul opened its waiting list in 2007 for three days and received more than 11,000 requests for applications. Minneapolis opened its list in 2008 for two days, and nearly 14,000 applications were received. More recently, Richfield opened its list in November 2009 and had 11,000 people turn out for 500 spots selected randomly by computer.

The general rule of thumb for housing agencies in the decision to close a Section 8 waiting list is when the number of names reaches an estimated 3-5 year wait. Determining exactly how long the wait will be for families on the list is challenging at best, because openings largely depend on turnover — people leaving their housing assistance. With the economic downturn, fewer people are leaving.

When asked when the list will be open again, Hester said, "I honestly don't know. I don't see how it will be any less than five years from now, and it could be a good bit longer than that."

8. Yes. There is a very blurry line between early morning and late night.

7. Computer issues aside....
I know for sure Section 8 is in shambles. I applied recently & was told the wait was indefinite. I wish they
offered me a cardboard box at least.

9. I apologize for letting this thread get off subject
This issue needs to be dealt with immediately. I am really sorry to hear of your recent experience with Section 8 but thanks for taking the time to let us know what is happening.
