Strange Nights of Stone
Strange days have found us
And through their strange hours
We linger alone
Bodies confused
Memories misused
As we run from the day
To a strange night of stone
– The Doors; Strange Days

It's a strange day in the United States. Considering the secrecy that surrounded Usama bin Laden's life, it is not surprising that the reports of his death are cause for some controversies. I find the discussions on my favorite internet discussion forum far more interesting than the celebrations on the various television news channels.

In my opinion, the single best book on bin Laden was Peter Bergen's 2006 history of the al Qaeda leader. I'd also add Michael Scheuer's books “Through Our Enemies' Eyes” and “Imperial Hubris” as important resources for understanding bin Laden in the context of the conflict between the US and radical Islam.

In the sense that bin Laden was killed on President Obama's watch, rather than Bush/Cheney's, I think it is significant. Also important is the all too obvious connection between Usama and Pakistani intelligence. However, judging from the reactions of those people crowding into public squares, celebrating bin Laden's death, I doubt that the general public will appreciate what has happened, nor what it means.

Not today, perhaps.

7. I Found It Interesting That They Were Adamant About Keeping It From The Pakistanis
Something else which caught my attention was the fact that they built a copy of his compound to practice in and nobody in Pakistani "Intelligence" noticed.

9. I think you are right.
And thanks for use of The Doors. I still have many recordings in vinyl. They are a fascination with my youngest son (and guitar player).
