Question about low-cost medical in Arizona

I have a co-worker whose daughter needs an MRI for a suspicious "spot" in her breast.

She went in for an MRI this morning, only to discover that her husband hadn't paid their COBRA premiums for the last few months.

The MRI would cost $1200.

Anybody have any ideas?

I know you all here on DU are fountains of information...any help would be appreciated.

2. You could search and find a lower cost MRI? Has an ultrasound been done?

My co-worker was pretty upset and I didn't want to ask too many questions. But I'll look at your link and talk to her.

3. Possibly consider Mexico. I don't know where in Arizona

she is but that might be an option.

6. This is probably the most sound and practical advise available.

Medical help for the people of Arizona is diminishing as we speak. Starting yesterday HHS has authorized the state to execute Brewer's "savings" plan. The medical expense deduction plan stopped taking new enrollments yesterday and will shut down October 1. This was for low income folks over the Medicaid line who's expenses would take them below poverty and gives them short term Medicaid to get through an emergency.

7. It's a sad business all around. Still, it's possible to get some medical

stuff done in Mexico at deep discounts over US prices. I don't know how convenient it would be, but sometimes convenience has to take a back seat.

11. It is heartbreaking. That was the news that I got 1st thing since it will impact clients there.

She also wants to freeze new enrollments for childless adults along with freezing out the remaining eligible folks at 75% of poverty and above to cut 107 million between the two proposals.

Ugly, ugly stuff. Makes you wonder how the Medicare portion of the Wealth Care and Profit Protection Act will shake out. I don't think the states will be able to absorb it and the administration is essentially agreeing by granting these waivers.

15. I showed this post to my boss.

His adult child is back at home after a few bumps in the road. He works as a cook...he graduated from one of our Scottsdale culinary schools.

My boss is a die hard Republican...even likes Sheriff Joe. Ugh.

Anyway, the kid cannot qualify for ACCCHS (sp?)because he makes too much money. So he has NO health insurance coverage.

I just had to point out his hypocrisy....in a nice way though. Don't most Republicans think that we should all be able to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps? Yet his kid applied for state sponsored health insurance????

He was very interested in the info in this thread. He actually had me print a copy of the MRI link.

Maybe he's staring to see the light. :-)

8. Planned Parenthood.

That would be the best starting place. They have access to low-cost options for their clients.

9. That is where I would start. They have been cut in future budgets but

they aren't down yet.

12. AHCCCS has some ways to help; I've had to use it myself.

AHCCCS workers tend to be able to figure things out. Definitely worth a try--and it isn't second class, either. I started seeing my PC 15 years ago through AHCCCS, now she's well-respected and one of the best in her field.
