GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. -- A dog survived a raging house fire for six hours by hiding in a water-filled bathtub, according to firefighters.

Firefighters were able to rescue the dog, a 1-year-old Belgian Malinois named Mia, from the basement of the burning home, according to Brock.

"She acts like a human for most things," Brumby said. "And that kind of showed it. She knew where to go and hide."
He said Mia was able to get to a bathtub on the lowest level of the house, where she waited as firefighters doused the home with water. As the water ran down into the basement, it filled the bathtub and soaked Mia, keeping her safe from flames, Brock said.

Brumby said the dog has learned how to open doors throughout the house, and that she had to open four doors to get to the bathtub where she was found.

19. both my Akitas could do doorknobs - and break into anything else

There's no drawer, door, cabinet, closet, etc. they can't get into... and it's not like they have any desire for anything in there, they just seem to do it for a look-see or just because they can.

They both never liked drinking out of a bowl and turned on the bathtub when they wanted a drink. I've loooooong since been in the habit of filling up the tub every day about half way after my shower to try keeping them from turning on the faucet for a drink (neither one of them bothered turning it off afterwards). If you gave my first Akita a bowl of water he'd slap at it, tip it over and "hide" the bowl under one of the couch cushions when you weren't paying attention (which is really ridiculous since being a big dog he had a big water bowl). The Akita I have now will stare at it for a bit then turn around and very carefully lower his ass in it till he's completely sitting in it... then look up at me with a grin that says "Is bitty swimmy pool, yes?".

Both of them also do this weird thing where they like to steal those smaller items that you use all the time... keys, sunglasses, toothpaste tube, pack of smokes, lighters, etc.... and hide them under the couch. Anything they want to hide they stuff under the couch every single time, and crazily enough neither dog knew each other since I didn't even get the second Akita pup until nearly a year after the the previous one died, and they aren't related to each other genetically in the least. It's amazing how they do soooo many weird quirky things exactly the same and usually the same way, yet their personalities are so very different in other ways.

Smartest damn dogs I've ever encountered.
