For all you people who bitch about the two party system
Canada's multi party system just gave the conservative party a majority (the equivalent of republicans gaining filibuster proof wins in the senate, HoR, and white house).

2. A majority with 39.5% of the vote. Sad.
I will vote for Obama and a Democratic ticket. Being practical I will not let the GOP in the door.

3. And America's gave us Nixon, Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II.
It's doin' a bang up job.

I fail to see any difference in the results you desire between the systems.

4. Damn.
At least their conservatives are left of our democrats, at least, as far as I understand.

6. While a minority, slightly to the right
But as a minority government, they were kept in check by the opposition. They could never go too far to the right or else the opposition could immediately vote them down, or BRING them down by triggering an election. Not anymore, there are no longer any checks or balances. Canada is about to go furthest to the right its ever been

5. That why we all need alternative voting so we can vote who we want and not
be penalized by having our votes 'wasted' if a first pick doesn't win.

7. It's called a "coalition government" and apparently Canada's only done it only once before.
In Israel it is a very common occurrence. Let's face it, if a Republican gets in the WH, we resign ourselves to eating shit for 4 years- and we do. And if a Democrat gets in the WH, we don't have to eat shit for 4 years.

A coalition government in a multi-party system means the air is probably going to stink of farts all the time but we won't usually have to eat shit at all.

It's all about what you're willing to put up with.

9. Cons have a majority. A coalition would do nothing
The problem is VOTE SPLITTING. Americans bitch and whine about their two party system, but vote splitting does not exist.

11. This is not a coalition government...
this is one party holding the majority of seats in Parliament.

A coalition government is when multiple parties form a coalition, and pool their seats together to form a government. Not the case here.

12. You're right- I misunderstood. I was looking at this like an Israeli general election.

They have like 26 parties. Quite a difference to the situation in Canada.

10. Who cares
At least they have a real democracy with intelligent people who are willing to vote their conscience. I would rather live in an actual representative democracy than a fake one where its all about coalitions and alliances.

15. And yet our two party system has given us what?
Conservative Dems and even more conservative 'Pugs. We're so far to the right that Eisenhower now looks like a liberal.

Sad to see Canada being taken over by corporate interests and now following our own sad path.
