In addition, an individual who works in the industry informed us that because they knew of what markers to looks for they were more able to do the test and come back with a meaningful result. They already had a sample of a relatives DNA to work with.

It is my understanding that this is why it takes so long for us, in part.

It is also true that at a crime lab, there are so many requests for that testing, that although the technology doesn't take that long to use, processing all the requests with limited resources does.

anticipating this would be needed some day. His sister had died of a brain tumor some time ago and they had her DNA from her brain from which they could extract mitochondrial DNA to compare. That is why it was so "quick."

This is important to understand. That is not the case generally, at all. Int he case of a rape kit, they have to sequence from scratch, so that they can compare to what may be multiple possible suspect's DNA, each of which have to be sequenced as well. It takes quite a while

15. Very good deal. It's not only a matter of identity, though.

I've been trying to figure out why this "sea burial" bothers me so much.

And what I come up with is that the returning of the dead to their own side, to their own people, is part of the resolution of an armed conflict. It's one of the most basic gestures of humanity that can be made after a war. You return the corpse and show that although there was a fight and you won, you didn't desecrate the dead, It's a gesture of fundamental respect for humanity, for being human.

It just seems to me that when these rituals are neglected for whatever reason, we are diminished a little. A little regard for humankind gets lost. And there's little enough of that as it is.
