The column, itself, is fair from someone who is not usually in our camp.

Those who write off Barack Obama as another Jimmy Carter are as foolish as they are wrong

But Obama sent in the choppers and the SEALs. This minimized the possibility of civilian causalities, an increasingly sore point in the Middle East, and ensured we would know that bin Laden really was dead.

Planning had been under way for months, with Obama intimately involved.

We have heard that America lacks the street-level intelligence so necessary in the war on terror. But it was classic gumshoe detective work that identified the courier who led them to bin Laden.

The intelligence agencies, the troops and their commander in chief performed flawlessly and with amazing secrecy.

1. classic gumshoe detective work
this is what pisses repugs off. this is what bushco ran on, NOT doing this insisting their way of all out war was better. resounding failure. they mocked kerry because he insisted on this. and obama showed them the difference

2. You picked out the one word that jumped off the page.
Question is, will the Republicans understand that waterboarding had nothing to do with it? Judging by the reader's forum, they still don't get it.

3. He says "Jimmy Carter" like it's a bad thing
First, both presidents gave the "go" for missions. So, where's the difference?

The Carter mission was a bit trickier, a large rescue as opposed to a simple arrest/kill. (as if these things are ever simple)

Beyond that, the details were out of the presidents' hands. Would Obama had known the fine-ness of the Irani dust that clogged air intake filters?

In the end, the only difference is that Carter's mission failed, and Obama's succeeded. No reflection on the abilities of either president.

Luck does play a part.

:hi:

4. I love Jimmy Carter. That is one do-over I wish we could go back to.
Our whole world would be different today if we had followed his path, with his conservation ideas.
