Martin Luther King Jr quote on celebrating death

"Are we seeking power for power's sake? Or are we seeking to make the world and our nation better places to live. If we seek the latter, violence can never provide the answer. The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

LOVE is the key! Only LOVE.

1. There is a difference between justice and revenge
and MLK was referring to revenge.

OBL's death was not a revenge killing.

13. Oh really?
And what is "justice" in your mind?

15. Yes, really.
OBL got justice. The punishment fit the crime.

Iraq did not - Iraq was revenge for Saddam's attempt on Bush 41.

2. But That Wasn't MLK...The Inner Tubes Strikes Again...
HT to Keith Olbermann for highlighting this on his Facebook page:

Friends of Keith Olbermann! #FOK
Sooo...that MLK "quote" that has been going around for the last 48 hours about Osama Bin Laden's death...it's a fake :) It's alright, no need to feel sheepish if you blindly reposted...just make a correction! (Thanks to FOKO member J. Ebner for pointing this one out...)

blog and citing this article from the Atlantic

http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/05/out-of-osamas-death-a-fake-quotation-is-born/238220/

A quick Google search turns up lots of tweets, all of them from today. Searching Martin Luther King Jr. quote pages for the word "enemy" does not turn up this quote, only things that probably wouldn't go over nearly so well, like "Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy to a friend." I'm pretty sure that this quote, too, is fake.

What's fascinating is the speed of it. Someone made up a quote, attributed it to MLK, Jr., and disseminated it widely, all within 24 hours. Why? What do you get out of saying something pithy, and getting no credit for it?

Perhaps they only wanted to say this thing, and knew that no one would pay attention unless it came from someone else. Or, perhaps they are getting a gargantuan kick out of seeing people repeat their lie ad infinitum. Either way, it seems strange to me.

While I agree with the sentiments of that quote...it's not what people think it is...

6. Wrong! This *was* MLK
http://www.bartleby.com/73/1893.html

It's from "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?" pp. 62–63 (1967).

Just because one quote was falsely attributed to MLK yesterday doesn't mean they all were.
