Best place to be a mom? Not the U.S.


A worldwide study released today found that the best place to be a mom is Norway, while Afghanistan is the worst. The United States is nowhere near the top, ranking 31st out of 43 developed countries, down three spots from last year's report.

The rankings were released by Save Our Children, an international aid organization, and are based on health, education and economic conditions for women and children.

Norway soared at the top of the list for its low maternal and child mortality rate, high ratio of female-to-male earned income, top-notch medical care, and its maternity leave that's among the most generous in the world. Norwegian moms receive a full year of paid leave and have only a 1 in 175 chance of losing a child before the age of five.

In contrast Afghanistan has the highest lifetime risk of maternal mortality. Expecting mothers are at least 200 times more likely to die in childbirth than from bombs or bullets.

Why isn't our country closer to the top? The main reason is that the United States' rate for maternal mortality is 1 in 2,100--the highest of any industrialized nation.

so, the REAL answer to the question of why are we ranked so lowly is that we elect Republican politicians.

7. because our govt thinks it's more important to allow the rich to hoarde

than it is to have affordable, available health care for people in this nation. Planned Parenthood is shorthand, to me, for a Republican hatred for the American people if any one of them should meet with some misfortune.

That's repulsive. We're the only western democracy w/o universal health care.

Our politicians are not doing a good job representing the people of this nation when health care is more important as a business than it is as a human right in a wealthy, civilized society.
