Folks Are Celebrating and Chanting "USA!" "USA!" Because...
A man that built a major terrorist organization, used violence to kill masses of innocent civilians worldwide, served as an inspirational leader to other groups that engaged in terrorist acts, called for other muslims to kill innocent people, and created a climate of fear in the U.S. for years was killed. Specifically, he was the leader behind two major terrorist attacks in NYC, one in Washington, DC, and another one that was foiled. Additionally, he was the leader/mastermind behind other planned attacks that were stopped before they were carried out. One of which was the planned mass killings during the milllenium celebration.

You are more than entitled to have qualms or personal misgivings about people celebrating OBL's death, and no one is telling you not to. However, when you demean the people who are celebrating, then you are not making any attempt to at least understand why people are celebrating. Also, when you use perjorative language to describe the celebrants, then that says a lot about your fundamental inability to understand your fellow man, and it shows a callous disregard for their feelings and emotions.

In sum, no one is saying that you should cheer. No one is saying that you should be happy. What I, and others, are saying is that you should understand why so many people ARE happy or at least make an attempt to do so. Dismissing and insulting the celebrants shows a huge lack of understanding of your fellow American.

1. Yet, it contributes to the collective amnesia that we helped create this once-CIA "asset"
And by virtue of that amnesia, nothing fundamental will actually "change."

So in that sense, the celebration is somewhat illusory...

7. No, It Does Not.
Not in any way whatsoever. If anything, we've become more attuned to these kind of under the table operations.

11. Well, yes it does. Quite a bit. The rah-rah ism has always been used to cover up tricky truths

2. "A man that built a major terrorist organization, used violence to kill masses of innocent civilians
Are you referring to Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, or his son, George W. Bush?

5. Oh come on now
you know the rules aren't the same when you're fighting Commies. I wonder if most Americans realize who armed these people.

A Democrat? Give it a rest. We are always going to make bad deals with those we think are allies...

On edit: Sorry, this was for #2.

4. That's how I see it too...
And I'm more than tired of the condescension of those who want to cast revelry in a sour light. It really is more telling of them than it is of those who choose to celebrate. Plus, 9/11 meant something different to everyone. Some people have been on pins and needles all this time. To chastise them is beyond wrong.

Celebrate, or don't, and leave it at that.

6. Mostly crowds of young people--they grew up with the spectre of this man
and what he did as a part of their lives. My children grew up with it, too, and as military brats he's had a MAJOR impact on their lives. Let people cheer if they want to. It's no skin off anyone else's nose.

17. 9/11 was plotted from mountain caves.
Keep laughing. It doesn't take high tech anything to perpetuate acts of horrendous violence. Box cutters.

16. You are having a problem that not everybody is joining
aren't you?

Some of us are fully aware of where this guy came from, who armed him and that NO... AQ is not that huge of an organization. It never was.

Dangerous, yes... huge, know, killed tens of thousands, not even close.

The worst one time damage they did was 9.11

Between the two embassies, and that it barely reaches 5K

Oh but what about London (not even 300)

But, but the Taliban? They were there well before we came to the scene though in modern form you can thank the CIA under Reagan...

And not understanding why not everybody is celebrating shows a complete lack of both tolerance and historic depth.

This is NOT WW II... this is NOT Victory in Japan Day...

This is another day in a dirty war that should, from the beginning, have been fought with intel and small units, very small specialized units.

By the way... if you were in the armed forces anytime during the last 10 years and were celebrating... but those guy who were actually THERE... are not celebrating. There is a sense of pride for a job well done... but celebration... no, no really.

For those operators once they finish the other hell (debriefing) they will get their next mission and life goes on.
