How could an unarmed OBL have resisted? Simple.
All he had to do was reach for a nearby weapon.

The raid took place after midnight and the residents were in bed, according to reports. So OBL very likely wasn't armed. But that doesn't mean he didn't reach for a gun as soon as they entered the room. And they had every right to stop him.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/05/03/official-guards-bin-laden-compound-time-raid/

Usama bin Laden appeared to be "reaching for a weapon" before he was shot by the U.S. team raiding his compound in Pakistan, a senior U.S. official told Fox News.
The detail was among many disclosed Tuesday that helped fill out the narrative of what exactly happened during the 40-minute raid that ended with bin Laden's death. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on Tuesday repeated the claim that bin Laden was not armed when U.S. forces arrived. He said only that bin Laden resisted -- that could be a reference to the claim that the terror leader reached for a weapon moments before he was shot dead.

3. Or reach for something out of sight, which could have been a weapon.
At close quarters, would people have preferred that the Seals wait to find out whether he's grabbing for a gun, grenade, or bomb?

5. I don't give a shit it they shot him to death with a BB gun
Edited on Tue May-03-11 05:45 PM by titaniumsalute
the miserable piece of shit is gone. I remember seeing the images of people jumping out of 80th floor windows of the WTC because it was too hot and smokey for them to stay inside. Those people were unarmed.

So let me ask...if there was someone else in the room shooting at a SEAL while OBL was in there was it OK to shoot him? So the White House had a story relayed to them but after further review they realized they didn't have it right. They could have easily "hidden the fact" that OBL was unarmed (who would have known) but they came out and said he actually wasn't. Good for them for coming clean.

I'm done with DU for a few weeks. This shit on here is getting nauseating.

6. Well there's an anonymous source
Not that I have a problem with it. News agencies all have anonymous sources at one time or another. A good idea sometimes because you can't always get the truth if people aren't willing to talk to you, you always hear journalists say they don't reveal who their sources are.

Just pointing it out with a lot of complaints I've read today about anonymous sources.

10. The order was sent down
to the SEALS to take him out and not take any chances. If OBL was in the compound, he was going to die that night regardless of what he was or was not reaching for. The administration didn't want OBL detained and on trial.

12. I don't have a problem with any of it
My only question is why didn't we bring the body back to the US?

Do an autopsy, see if there is anything we could learn from that

Probably nothing, but you never know for sure until you do it

Also - and this is just me personally - I wished we could have taken him alive - not because I feel bad for him, but his intelligence value alone

The SEALs did what they had to do, and they had to kill him. I just wish we could have had the chance to interrogate him, that's all

We did what we had to do and we did it well

17. I'm not concerned about it. The person who shot him thought
he was resisting. Happens every day, right here in the United States between police and others.

None of us were there. None of us was holding the weapon. None of us saw a fucking thing. Debating what happened and why is a worthless exercise. The bottom line is that OBL, a terrible human being, is dead and resting on the bottom of the ocean. That is the only thing we know.

It is probably the only thing we will know. It's sufficient.

18. It doesn't matter.
My favorite part was when they dumped Osama's body off the side of a carrier. It's clear that President Obama wants a clean slate with this. He's correct in wanting it that way.

21. One wrong move.
Even the woman lunging at the soldiers may have been perceived as a general threat of hostility to someone involved in a firefight only moments before.

On the other hand, dead men tell no tales...

23. Tonight Rachel did a piece that was profound.
She played all the different stories from different sources. Reports that varied wildly on the number of helicopters, number of troops involved, height of the walls, etc., etc.

It was her thought on it that this is still a developing story, and the truth will be distilled eventually from the myriad sources of this conflicting information.

I think she's right. She usually is, after all.

24. If you bust into a room
and find OBL in his skivvies, do you assume he's unarmed? If you make such an assumption then you're not the one busting into the room because you're too damn dumb to get into the program in the first place.

26. So based on that, was he armed or not? And why don't any DUers wanted him taken alive?
Pure hatred? Sure the man was evil and what he did was evil. So was a lot of other monstrous crimes for which people were brought to justice. But apparently the Interahamwe killing all those Tutsis is a lesser crime, since they got sent to a special tribunal.

27. Whether or not he was armed, "resisted" means when the soldiers were told to "capture or kill" Osama
the officer was winking when he said "capture."

Normally, I'd have a problem with that.

But I'll make an exception for Osama.
