Chicken nuggets are 53% chicken...the 'extra parts' of retired egg layers - Yum!
Edited on Thu May-05-11 08:04 PM by Liberal_in_LA
CLEVELAND -- What actually goes into the chicken nuggets that are found in your child's kids meals?

Are chicken nuggets in your kids' meals every time you hit the drive-thru or take them out for dinner? Have you ever wondered how healthy they really are?

It all starts on a chicken farm.

Usually, only retired egg layers are destined for nuggets, since their meat is cheap. Tendons, tissue, cartilage, organs, and other chicken extras are ground up into a fine poultry paste. It's typically washed with ammonia to kill bacteria and treated with an artificial flavoring.

"We basically looked at the nuggets like these and determined that they're 53 percent meat," said Dr. Bruce Hemming, a microbiologist with Microbe Inotech Laboratories.

What about the rest of the nugget?

"Breading and other components make up the coating of the nugget," Hemming said. "The big issue is the nutritional content here."

A nutritionist describes a chicken nugget as "half chicken, half nugget, more than half fat."

1. It's nice that the meat is used rather than wasted in landfills.
I hate it when I read about the wastage of perfectly good meat, just because it isn't a prime rib or something.

16. What's it made from?

Customer: Excuse me, but what was that in there?
Counter Worker: It's chicken!
Customer: Chicken?
Counter Worker: Processed.
Customer: Processed?
Counter Worker: That's like when they take a lot of chickens and assemble the respective parts.
Customer: Parts? What parts?
Counter Worker: What parts?
Other Worker: Different parts.
Counter Worker: Parts is parts.

15. In a survival course I ate worms, maggots, bugs, whole roasted mice.....
Anything that contained calories and wouldn't kill me.

Get hungry enough and rat meat looks like prime rib......

20. Well, I grew up poor on a farm and as my grandmother used to say... we eat everything
except the beak. But clearly, both you and I were informed about what we were eating.

In a natural setting we are too, after we shuffle off the mortal coil.....Only fair to be food for maggots and bugs and the occasional coyote.......

28. Well, according to the guy that wrote "Eat This, Not That,"
Hamburger joints use hamburger meat that includes hooves. They buy that god-awful beef mixture from a commercial beef factory that uses that same ammonia treatment that the chicken processing does. With that in mind, I don't see why that don't toss in the beak too.

its better than meat & meat by products. Make a big tray and freeze them. As an up tick find some wooden BBQ shi ka bob sticka & make chicken strips on a stick....kids will go crazy for them.

22. This is the mainstay of the US school lunch program!
It is on our lunch menu EVERY DAY and it is all some kids eat for lunch EVERY DAY.

I know this because I have friggin' lunch duty EVERY DAY.

They don't need to eat that crap or any other meat products.

I am hoping that the new school lunch guidelines will do just that. They don't take effect until 2012-13 and there will be tons of complaining about them.
