Park Service Fines Tourists For Walking On Old Faithful

WYOMING - Some national park jaywalkers get busted by a webcam viewer from thousands of miles away. The National Park Service provided video of a group of tourists illegally walking on the "Old Faithful" geyser in Yellowstone National Park last week.

A webcam viewer called park rangers, who came and found about 30 people trespassing and taking pictures. Rangers issued three citations, at $125 each, to the group leader, bus driver and one other person.

Old Faithful erupts every 90 minutes, and park officials say the visitors could have been seriously hurt by boiling hot water

5. The danger is unbelievable

The crust in the area is very thin with boiling water under it. When the geyser goes off, you have pressurized boiling water.

Stupid would be an understatement.

Parts of that place look like an alien planet, and some of them are just as toxic and dangerous. About a score of people have died in Yellowstone from falling into scalding water.

It's a really cool park, though. :)

We have not been able to get there for several years and miss it.

We used to go every 2 - 3 years and were there the year of the great fires.

Caller: “My grandson mailed this to me with your internet this morning.”

Me: “Sir, I do not mean to offend you. But, I am going to repeat what’s going on, so I can better understand the situation. Your grandson sent you an image this morning in your email of an armadillo. And now that same armadillo is on your porch, staring you down?”

Caller: “Yes! That’s what I’ve been telling you this whole time!”

Me: “Sir, the internet does not work that way. The armadillo on your porch was not placed there by us. You need to call animal control.”

Caller: “I guess getting to help me was too much to ask for!” *hangs up*

I live in Wine Country and am appalled at the idiotic things these young people do.

My landscape is very unique and involves some very rare flora. I have lost count of the number of times I have pulled up behind a Wine Tour limo parked in front of my driveway and found a half-dozen entitled young fucks horsing around on my lawn (which is actually a meadow). If I was still in Texas, I would shoot them. I cannot get away with that, here.

They actually walk right up to my entry veranda to have their pictures taken.

I got so pissed off yesterday that I made a suspension of habanero peppers and worm tea. I can spray my grasses and leave a residue that could put a person in the ER.

I wish those fines could have been $1,000 each.

-- the danger from walking off the boardwalk is nothing to laugh at. Generally, it's just some moran of a tourist who gets his fingers burned when he decides to see "if that water is really all that hot." Actually walking out on the geyser is a whole new level of stupidity. :crazy:

22. Beautiful pic. I spent a few growing up years in Montana--

every summer we would camp for a GLORIOUS week in Ye3llostone. I went back with my own 12 yo son the summer before last and he was just as enchanted as I was at a younger age.

As an Arizonan, of course I've seen the Grand Canyon many times, but Yellowstone never ceases to amaze me.

Trust me, you'll only do that once, and Old Faithful is obviously a billion times bigger.
I guess our national parks are a learning experience, even on the most base level.

I had to tell a Asian woman that she could not walk off the paths... she was polite and embarrassed.

I was polite too.

That said, that whole Yellowstone/Teton area is awesome.
