Money Makes Women Seek Out Hotter, Older PartnersA new psychological study has identified the scientific-sounding "George Clooney Effect," which leads us ladies to seek out older, more physically attractive partners as our financial independence increases. Surprised?

The researchers conducting the study certainly were, at least on the age issue. "We'd assumed that as women earn more, their partner preferences would actually become more like those of men, with a tendency towards preferring younger, more attractive partners rather than those who can provide and care for children," says Dr. Fhionna Moore of Scotland's University of Abertay Dundee. But after surveying 3,770 participants (1,851 women, 1,919 men) about their backgrounds, lives, and earnings, the researchers found the opposite was true.

Titled "The Effects of Control of Resources on Magnitudes of Sex Differences in Human Mate Preferences," and published by the journal Evolutionary Psychology, the study says that as women become more financially successful, they care less and less about "instinctive preferences" such as a partner's ability to provide security and material resources. Autonomy gives women greater flexibility to focus on less pressing matters, such as whether their partner has nice eyes. By focusing more on the looks stuff, financially independent women become more similar to men—except that men are said to be drawn to younger partners. "The popular stereotype of powerful women adopting male patterns of behaviour is strongly questioned by these new results," the study concludes.

Why would women want older partners as they move on up the ladder? The article doesn't spell it out, but one plausible reason is that older men are likely to exhibit the levels of success and self-assurance that these more confident women might seek.

i know i didnt want to marry a man that was lazy, didnt work, and couldnt pull his weight. i was taking care of me fine. wasnt going to put myself in a position to take care of another.

but that is different from marry for status and money.

there are some that will be bought to be in a relationship just as there is some men that will marry for eye candy and pay. but not women as a whole. those are users.

I did marry a lazy loser who preferred to fish while I worked. I divorced him shortly after realizing this.

It wasn't about his money - if he were doing something worthwhile (like going to school or volunteer/charity work), I would have been happy to 'support' him but all he wanted to do was smoke pot and fish.

I wanted a house. I wanted a garden. I needed a partner to make that happen. I have one now.

evolutionary behavorists want to create a patriarchal rule in our behaviors. regardless of how intellectual it truly is.

to not even take into consideration from beginning of time to historically recent time, a woman was not allowed to work or be educated. like that has NOTHING to do with the numbers. they are changing, as freedom and independence and education is had by women. a swift "evolutional progression" like never seen before. 3 decades later and all that was "biological" is being challenged. scaring a lot of people. working hard to put us back in the roles.

...doesn't it seem a bit on the completely backwards side to say that what they do once they're free from that is conditioned? This article is basically the opposite of your contention, or at least as I read your contention. When financial security is taken care of, there is a trend towards choosing attractive older men. How then does that make an environment of 'no choice' and 'get back in your role'?

I would bet that a truer summary of this study would be to say that rich women prefer men in roughly the same age range as poor women, unlike rich men who chase after the young hotties.

But in case I'm wrong ....

I know there must be some rich, attractive young women out there ....

It's a fair trade. I run an ezine/community for single women 35 and older. . . They KNOW that at 35 they have a MUCH better shot with the 50 year old guy than they do a 35 year old guy . . . who wants a young chick with perky boobs and no lines on her face.

I.E. They date the men that want to date them that allow them to be the 'younger chick'. Same with my friends in their early 50s -

They know the average 50 year old guy is just as shallow as the 25 and 35 year old guy - AND - the 65 year old guy . . . who looks at them as the 'young chick'.

Oh and your damned if you DO date someone that's 25 when your 40 - then vulgar smug marrieds call you a cougar! :rofl: Oh hell- it's a man's world - some of us know that - and we do what we gotta do to get by.

As long as no animals or people are harmed - no big deal - you know?
