My daughter's puppy got out of the yard.
"Someone" called the number on the tag and told her that they would give the puppy back, but wanted a reward. WTF is wrong with people?
My daughter works two jobs and barely has enough to pay her bills. She doesn't have the money to pay ransom on a dog.
She went to the address with a friend of hers who has a dad of dubious character.
When they saw her friend...all of the sudden they didn't have the puppy.
My daughter found someone she knew who said that the puppy was dumped on the other side of town--but wouldn't say by who. The dog would have NEVER found her way home.:(
She did find her dog but I sincerely hope these folks who tried to extort money from a hard-working kid have horrible things happen to them. I am getting so fucking tired of mean people.

Around here dogs have been known to disappear from yards. Some are "found" after an ad with a reward is posted, some are dropped off miles from home for no reason and some are never found. Had one little guy show up here from a different state. He was a good 30 miles from home and with hard looking and luck the owners found him. We held on to him and placed a found ad in the paper. Finally gave him to a cousin (he was a Jack Russell and she loves them)after a month. Two weeks later we got a call about him. They just happened to be in the county and just happened on an old newspaper with our found ad. They were happily reunited. Someone grabbed him out of his yard and was seen. The man tried chasing down the car but lost it. No one ever did find out why he was taken.

I don't leave my dogs out when I'm not home. Though doubt anyone is going to try going through the very territorial GSD but still bring them in when gone and keep an eye on them when they are out.

I know how distressing this must have been; I lost my dog for a week years ago. The person who picked him up on a rainy day took him home & took good care of him for 4 days, & didn't want the $100 I gave her, so there are some good people out there, too. It was worth every penny to get him back.

Sorry you had such a terrible person to deal with. I learned in my search for my dog that there are too many who think of pets as just animals.

My mother's service dog, a Golden Retriever, got away from her one night. She did get the dog back but someone had put a cigarette burn on the dog's muzzle. Sick people out there indeed.

someone saw a couple of women take my cousin's Pomeranian out of her yard. After my cousin posted a reward the two women brought the dog back claiming they "found" her. My cousin knew better but paid them anyway because she was afraid if she didn't she wouldn't get her dog back. It was nothing but theft, pure and simple. :mad:

I've been used as the 'dubious' friend before. I'm 6'+ 220lbs, long hair, red beard and look as though I just stepped out of Norse sagas. I agree with the other posters in recommending that people go with friend(s) in these situations, it's just safer.

As for those that take pets in order to extort money - May Geri and Fricke (Odin's wolves) deal with them, harshly.

could be a big part of the answer. I get off work at 2:00 pm, and occassionally see a clip of Maury or Jerry Springer - those people are totally FUCKED and I don't think they are the exception. 21. I agree. We actually had a dog napping ring of thugs working our area for awhile a few years ago.

It was pathetic, they would steal the dog and then claim they found it.
It only took a few weeks for the cops to figure out that the same 4 people were finding all of the lost dogs in this town.

And then they asked for a reward to cover their expenses, too.
Which was to pay for the gas they used while they drove around casing all of the houses looking for dogs in the back yards that were small enough for them to steal.

I'm so glad to read that the puppy is safe back at home.

And word to the wise: Anyone who happens to lose a pet and puts up posters, places ads, etc., should always leave some details about the animal out of the information. Something that anyone who had found the pet could easily verify - like a marking, etc. Our rescue group has had instances where someone calls saying they've found a pet, but that they won't give the pet's location without a reward. Most times, these idiots do not have the pet in their possession.

If you ask for something verifiable, that is one way, at least, to determine if the callers are for real. Same is try should you find a pet, and have callers wanting to claim the pet. Ask for details to determine if you're speaking to the real owner.

in research also steal dogs. They especially look for deep chested dogs and beagles. It's quite lucrative. When I was working in the research dept. at a big 10 university a few years ago...animals were quite expensive to purchase.
