Beebe, Ark. (bird kill) northeast of Little Rock. Ozark, Ark is northwest of Little Rock. Distance is about 125 miles by google maps.

Related or coincidence? Don't know yet. Interesting to see what the state says about the redwings.

Was it in the same river valley?

Birds flying 120 miles in two days would be nothing.
Red-wing blackbirds are know to visit shorelines. I've seen them in marsh grasses plenty of times.

Ozark is pretty much 127 miles straight west of Bebe as the blackbird flies. (or not, as the case may be) Most of the trip follows I40 past the nuclear reactor at Russleville to Conway and then continues straight east to Beebe.

I heard the state wildlife dept is speculating some kind of fish disease because it only affected one species. (Drum) But it wouldn't surprise me if the fish kill and bird kill were related. Lots of things will cause a massive fish kill if it gets in the water, and, considering that Blackbirds are marsh birds, along with the fact that (so far) the only other species mentioned is a mallard duck, it's plausible. The lightning strike theory I'd dismiss out of hand; there are no reports of smoking, burned birds, which you would get with a lightning strike. Hail, maybe, but gee, you'd think people would have noticed hail falling along with five thousand birds, so I don't hold much faith in that one either. There are reports that say the birds are pretty beat up, but then, anything falling out of the sky that's unable to slow it's descent is going to land hard and get messed up.

Then again, in '09, the USDA was poisoning starlings that were bothering a New Jersey feedlot and forgot to notify the folks in town what what was going on until a couple thousand birds just dropped dead from the sky. Haven't seen any officials own up to this yet, so I think they'll eventually rule it was accidental. Now, whether or not they'll ever name a culprit, I think depends on whose palm is being greased...it *is* Arkansas we're talking about.

25. Bird Kill Has Happened Before In Illinois

This happened some years back and they traced it to a farmer who was using illegal pesticides on his field. I hope it's nothing more than another idiotic mistake and not more sinister.
