There are actually many Christian churches who are NOT against abortion, are NOT pro-war, and are very pro "helping those with disabilities or the soldiers returning home sick and ill or the unemployed, old, seniors, healthcare". Many are NOT anti-LGBT, as well.

Please do not lump all Christians into an incorrect pre-conceived notion.

the church I belong to, the Episcopal Church, has many gay and women clergy, and the Presiding Bishop is a woman. The church takes many progressive stands on social issues.

Many mainline denominations are liberal, there are more liberal Christians in numbers than conservatives.

My own church is United Methodist. My local church congregation is a "reconciling congregation", meaning we have made a public statement that we welcome all to our family, and one need not hide who s/he is.

Our Bishop was the president of the UM Bishops association in 2002, and asked for a meeting with President Bush to voice the church's opposition to invading Iraq. He was turned down.

We are very much involved in helping the people in need. I am actually the chair of our local "Missions and Outreach" committee. We have other committees which work on other such issues as well.

We have UMCOR - United Methodist Committee On Relief - with missionaries in Haiti and other countries around the world.

The UM church was a leader in women's rights as well, having full ordination for women since 1957.


Oh - and how about the Episcopal church with full rights of the LGBT community, including an openly gay Bishop?

I think maybe you need to open your mind a little, and leave your own prejudices behind.

Three health insurance programs — Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) — will together account for 21 percent of the budget in 2010, or $753 billion. Nearly two-thirds of this amount, or $468 billion, will go to Medicare, which provides health coverage to around 46 million people who are over the age of 65 or have disabilities. The remainder of this category ($285 billion) funds Medicaid and CHIP, which in a typical month in 2010 will provide health care or long-term care to about 64 million low-income children, parents, elderly people, and people with disabilities. Both Medicaid and CHIP require matching payments from the states.

Safety net programs: About 14 percent of the federal budget in 2010, or $482 billion, will support programs that provide aid (other than health insurance or Social Security benefits) to individuals and families facing hardship.

These programs include: the refundable portion of the earned-income and child tax credits, which assist low- and moderate-income working families through the tax code; programs that provide cash payments to eligible individuals or households, including Supplemental Security Income for the elderly or disabled poor and unemployment insurance; various forms of in-kind assistance for low-income families and individuals, including food stamps, school meals, low-income housing assistance, child-care assistance, and assistance in meeting home energy bills; and various other programs such as those that aid abused and neglected children.

$285 billion + $482 billion = $767 billion. How much money has to be spent helping low income families before we're considered to be "helping the poor"?

17. I'm just commenting on the medicare payments, but...

... here's the deal with that.

First, almost all medicade is administered by private insurance companies which means we are paying for a middle man to do nothing. And don't go to the, but private companies are more efficient BS argument. If it were true then the other nations that have government administered health care would do less for more money. We have an privately administered system and we do less with much more money.

Second, as long as the system is mired in the inefficiencies of the private companies, the costs will continue to rise because the root issues have not been dealth with.

Because taxes are deducted from our paychecks specifically for Medicare; same with Social Security. I do consider Medicaid to be a social program though.

industrialized nation over 20%....and so on. Sweden Norway, Finland are all well under 5%. With austerity cut backs many countries have fallen a great deal like France to 7% and a few other countries have fallen to as bad as the mid teens, still no competition for us.

We have improved somewhat with things like the EIC (though remember extending expanded version is still temporary and part of the tax cut deal)
There were many boosts to fighting poverty in stimulus bill that are ending now too.
But we are better than we use to be. It use to be over 25% of our children in poverty

Medicare of course can't be counted as money helping the poor since it is not income dependent, is paid for and goes to high and low income people alike.
