45. The Admins were requesting writers for their new site...

...so I came to DU as a writer before I ever got interested in discussion groups. They seemed like a waste of time. My first article that I found in archives was March 31, 2001. However, after 2 or three months, I started posting, along with most of the old timers here, in the different discussion groups. At first, I posted a lot in LBN and finally migrated to the GD and GDP forums.

It seems I have seen every argument at least twice. Sometimes it seems there is nothing new left to say. I have attempted to challenge DUers to think for themselves and to disregard much of the dogma. I have been less successful as DU has changed over time. The passion and the memory of the 2001 election gradually faded and it became more about the Party than about a cause. But that's just the way people are.

Ten years is a long time.

when you can interact with the writer. First I came here because of the "Top ten conservative idiots" that I saw on "hated.com" and then reading the discussion forums I remember being impressed by the writing and reasoning, particularly of NSMA. So I joined to interact with people like that. But then later, having lost my password, I drifted away to other sites like Altercation, The Daily Howler and Counterpunch where I would email the writers/bloggers and often hear back or see my letter posted on Altercation. When the Democratic primary started up, I got kinda sick of Counterpunch because they spent most of their time punching the Democratic candidates instead of the Bush administration.

Anyway, when I wasn't posting, I also stopped reading (except for the top ten every Sunday night and also Krugman and Herbert and Kristoff until the NYT started charging for their columns.) Until after the Kerry loss, then I wanted some support to help me cope and organize and strategize for 2006 and beyond.

My welcome has always been tenuous though, coming as I do from the Republican Wing of the Democratic Party (although I was a Deaniac before switching to Clark over taxes (which Clark also punted)) and the first candidate I donated to was Tammy Baldwin, a member of the Progressive caucus.)

all the while trying to sell my articles to other online sources. No luck. I finally broke down and began submitting articles to DU, since they were very accepting of my work and always displayed it prominently.

I was here in 2001, but didn't officially join until the following year. Got banned a year and a half later, began using my real name and the rest is an amazing and often bumpy ride.

Glad to see you are still around. I don't post much anymore.

I'm sure it differs from browser to browser -- and please excuse me for not knowing the technical term for this -- but if you have a function that allows you to view -- *somewhere* on your monitor -- the full URL of any imbedded hyperlink by holding your cursor over it without actually clicking on it, then you can find your registration number the same way by holding ("hovering") your cursor over any one of the 4 icons named above.

At the end of the URL there will be "id=(six numerals)" and by subtracting 10,000 from the number you see, you will have your registration number.

Your registration number is 6049, btw. Mine is 6679 -- so you registered before I did. :)

We were all following all the leads to new sites(dem)back then. Online Journal, Media Whores, Bartcop, Smirking Chimp(I used to be #62 at the Chimp)back when they were numbering and DU.

Longtime member(2000)at Dems.com, later one of the mods over there--17K posts there but it took me until the '06 election here to break the thousand mark.

Remember Will Pitt when he joined Dems.com. He asked for info about this and that...his posts looked like a troll which we were infested with in those days...he sort of got a cold reception from we mods and didn't stay long. Do you recall that Will?

Have to add that DU and the other sites that have survived have changed greatly over the ten years. We were all desperate for info at that time and the spirit of the sites was much more cooperative...very few single issue members.

I was arguing with a wingnut on a local board and he accused me of finding whatever I said on Democratic Underground. I Googled and found it. Thought I had landed in heaven. Just loved what I saw from the very first time I landed here.

So many good things have happened to me because of my involvement with DU. Lots of great friends I've hooked up with in RL also. Great parties at evlbstrd's house. Mabus and Admiral Loinpresser and galloglas and Patrice and kiteinthewind and muserider and a bunch of others I'm likely leaving out. Met them all on DU and now consider them good friends. A trip to DC isn't complete without hissyspit. And my friends in the education forum keep me sane in this current teacher hating campaign.

Can't imagine a day where I don't get up, make coffee and read DU while I'm drinking it.

Good times.

For the record, I joined in 2004 after stumbling upon a reference to DU in a Common Dreams article. My DU password includes my age at the time. It's a shocking reminder how long I've been here every time I log in on another computer. I would have joined earlier if I'd known about it as I was very active in peace work at the time. I don't think I've missed more than 20 days since, checking in - a least skimming the Greatest Page, or before that, LBN headlines.

To all of you originals who made DU what it was then and help keep DU reality-based now, I salute you! :patriot:
