Dollar General to Hire 6,000 for 2011 Expansion


Dollar General (DG) announced Monday morning that its 2011 expansion plan to open 625 new stores will allow it to hire 6,000 workers.

The discount retailer said the store openings in new suburban, rural and metropolitan markets would create 6,000 new jobs in local communities. Hiring will be spread throughout its existing 35-state operating area, as well as three new states: Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire. The company also plans to remodel or relocate 550 stores.

"Bringing our store model of convenience and value to more people in more states is an exciting opportunity for us," said Chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling. "We believe the new communities and states we are entering will benefit from the new jobs, shopping choices and dedication to community found at Dollar General."

Unlike many other companies that have spent the past several years laying off employees, 2011 will mark Dollar General's third consecutive year of creating, rather than eliminating jobs. If its estimates for this year are accurate, from 2009 though 2011, the company will have created more than 15,000 new jobs.

Dollar General are a convenient store Walmart. The merchandise is very low end as is the help and the setup. I can imagine what these jobs will pay. For them to invest in 6000 stores says alot about bad news. They have the figures and know the market is theirs. What does it say when Dollar general expands while hardly anything else does.

8. The resale shops

Actually, I prefer them. I get awesome stuff for great prices. I'm actually dressing better since starting making the resale shop rounds. It takes patience and some digging, but I think of it as a treasure hunt. Last year I snatched a Land's End down jacket for $5 and not a thing wrong with it. I get the most compliments on my resale finds, which is nearly everything these days. Now my closet is filled with designer labels.

Household goods are sometimes a little harder, but it seems once I put something on my mental checklist, I'll find it soon. I've found I need a lot less than I thought and if I don't get something instantly, I usually find I didn't really need it all that badly.

I mostly shop on half-price days. You have to be willing to walk out with anything. And at first, I found myself buying too much crap just because it was cheap. But watching an episode of Hoarders gets that out of my system pretty quickly.
