Ensign really messed up a rare, unique friendship of two married couples. As singles, both women had worked together at a restaurant & were friends before either had met their future husbands. Ensign married Darlene, who later introduced the future Hamptons. Both men became best friends, too, joining a Christian ( :eyes: ) golf club. The Ensigns' oldest son was born just days after the Hamptons' twins, so all the children became close.
The Hamtons moved from California to Nevada into a $1M home within walking distance to the Ensigns'. Both became employees of Ensign's senate office, but the affair began when the Hamptons moved in with the Ensigns following a burglary at the Hampton home.
Lots of deceit follows. Ensign, who paid for many vacations for both families as well as other expensive perks -- including an annual $20k for tuition for the Hampton children to attend the same exclusive school as the Ensign children -- had put the Hamptons in the position of being beholden to him. Ensign relentlessly pursued Mrs. Hampton &, despite several interventions from Ensign's circle of friends, continues to pursue his friend's wife & lying to others about it.
Stuck with a home they couldn't afford & no longer able to work for Ensign, the Hamptons were in a jam. Ensign was no longer paying school tuition for the Hamptons' children. That's when Ensign came up with the idea to pay the couple a severence check. Only the severence money went $20k over & beyond the combined yearly salaries of the couple, AND the money didn't come out of Ensign's senate office budget. It came from Ensign's father's family trust fund.
Anxious to see what Rachel reports tonight.
