Former Gov. Edwin Edwards to be released from prison this month
Former Gov. Edwin Edwards is scheduled to be released from prison to a halfway house this month, his family said in a statement released this morning.
The specific date for Edwards' release has not been made public. The federal Bureau of Prisons said it does not announce the date in advance of the release.
Edwards, 83, began serving a 10-year sentence on racketeering charges at a federal prison facility in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2002. He was transferred to Oakdale in November 2004.
Under federal sentencing guidelines he was required to serve a minimum of eight and a half years before being eligible for release.
Anna Edwards said her father will be released from the federal prison in Oakdale to a federal halfway house for six months.
