End of Days in May? Christian group spreads word
RALEIGH, N.C. — If there had been time, Marie Exley would have liked to start a family. Instead, the 32-year-old Army veteran has less than six months left, which she'll spend spreading a stark warning: Judgment Day is almost here.

Exley is part of a movement of Christians loosely organized by radio broadcasts and websites, independent of churches and convinced by their reading of the Bible that the end of the world will begin May 21, 2011.

To get the word out, they're using billboards and bus stop benches, traveling caravans of RVs and volunteers passing out pamphlets on street corners. Cities from Bridgeport, Conn., to Little Rock, Ark., now have billboards with the ominous message, and mission groups are traveling through Latin America and Africa to spread the news outside the U.S.

"A lot of people might think, 'The end's coming, let's go party,'" said Exley, a veteran of two deployments in Iraq. "But we're commanded by God to warn people. I wish I could just be like everybody else, but it's so much better to know that when the end comes, you'll be safe."

3. What is she going to do when it doesn't happen? Will she accept the standard "miscalculation" excuse
or will she shake this stuff off and move on with her life?

14. Most of the time these types just pretend they were right and don't really address why the world is
still here. They are the strangest people to talk to. Kind of like supply-sided economics believers.

23. She is already ready for that scenario.
"If May 21 passes and I'm still here, that means I wasn't saved. Does that mean God's word is inaccurate or untrue? Not at all," Warden said.

"End of times" fundies are the worst people.

5. How many people does it take to say something random, and then get it into mainstream news?
AP, the San Francisco Chronicle and NPR have picked this up. How many websites does it take, no matter how ridiculous the message is, before the reporters pick it up, like 5 year olds trying to play soccer?

28. The guy behind the May 21 prediction, Harold Camping, is an idiot
He believes that there is a code in the Bible (interpreted rather arbitrarily by him, of course) that tells him when the world will end.

Yet in all of his searching for "codes" in the Bible, he somehow misses Matthew 24:36, Mark 13:35 and 1 Thessalonians:1-2; which all explicitly and in the simplest terms possible state that no man knows when the world is going to end.

What is perhaps the funniest thing of all is that the slogan for Camping's nonsense is, "we can know."

Camping already predicted the world would end in 1994, but, of course, was wrong. A few years before him, there was a guy named Edgar Whisenant that made similar predictions based on a supposed "code" in the Bible.

Most fundamentalist Christians don't believe Camping's prediction, and many of Camping's other beliefs are downright weird, even by fundamentalist standards.

P.T. Barnum was right: there's a sucker born every minute.

17. Here they go again...
This was supposed to happen in 1900, and 1988, and 1999, and alleged to be happening in 2012, and so many other times. We're still here. When it happens, it happens, and I don't thik it'll happen in the sweeping way that Ms. Exley and her fellow prognosticators seem to think it will. In fact, if and when it ever does happen, it may very well be at the hands of our own greed and irresponsibility, if we don't take care of each other and this planet we live on. But I don't buy what the Rethug Fundies say for a minute.

They don't read the whole bible...

Just the parts they're told to read...

Interpreted in just the way they're told to interpret them.

Chapter and verse numbering is absolutely necessary for the bible to succeed. Otherwise folks would read other nearby parts of the text and would surely figure out that they'd been had.

37. How many times have we been through this stupid end days crap?
I remember hearing similar "repent now, or else" routines via "The Late, Great Planet Earth" and other sources ever since I was a kid. It won't be "god" who destroys us. As we've demonstared as a species, we've got the whole destruction thing down to a habit.
