Thousands gather at Capitol to ‘keep the pressure on’ Walker (Saturday)

Thousands of protesters massed at the Capitol on Saturday in an effort to show that outrage over Gov. Scott Walker’s budget proposals is not dead, three months after he unveiled his plan to curtail collective bargaining rights for public workers.

On a chilly and drizzly May day, a crowd gathered on the Capitol lawn and pooled out into State Street, listening to speakers urge them to keep up the fight against Walker’s policies.

“We have to reclaim our moral outrage, our sense of indignation,” Mahlon Mitchell, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin, said to cheers from the crowd. “We have to keep the pressure on and let them hear us.”

The “Fight Is Not Over” rally, organized by We Are Wisconsin and Wisconsin Wave, did not swell to the size of some of the weekend protests in February and March, when tens of thousands of people gathered. The Madison Police Department estimated 7,000 to 10,000 people attended Saturday’s rally.

Third month of Wisconsin Capitol protests: Unions smell blood in recalls

The scene today closely resembled that of the previous protests of the past three months. A sea of blue and red “Stand With Wisconsin” signs greeted incoming pedestrians from State St. Thousands of protestors carrying signs, many wearing union garb, milled around the square. A large procession, lead by a group of firefighters, marched around the Capitol.

The recall elections were a big theme today. Kory Kozlowski, of the State Senate Democratic Committee, was holding one side of a large banner that read, “Recall Them All.” Another woman was gathering urging people to sign a pledge to recall Gov. Walker, who cannot be recalled until after one year in office.

The steps of the Capitol were packed with people listening to speakers from a stage. Wisconsin AFL-CIO President Phil Neuenfeldt introduced State Sen. Jon Erpenbach (D-Middleton), who urged the crowd to spend time helping Democrats win back the Senate via recall elections.

“This is the last time I want to see you in Madison,” he said. “You can go vacation in Minocqua and help out Jim Holperin…or La Crosse, which is beautiful right now, and help out Jen Shilling.................

9. I say, we can do it ALL!

I was mad at him for saying that! a little...I want and need the continued protests here, but also understand how important it is to get into the hinterlands and do the necessary work it takes to 1) get Dems to VOTE in the recall elections, 2) build recall Walker momentum.

Oh yeah, and 3) I am/we still are working on the recount...

11. I think he was right--we need to put our energy

into the recalls-actually physically get out there. But I sense there will be a continued presence of protesters at the Capitol-but big Labor is putting its resources on the ground.
