I know some people will say that about anything that comes out of a Republican's mouth. But that most certainly is racial dogwhistling at its best (worst).

But then, a lot of folk would rather live in Chicago than Texas...

28. Yeah, are you seeing the irony too?
Newtie is so "racist" he wants the whole country to be just like Texas, where the Hispanic population outnumbers whites.

Instead of saying that he can make the US look more like a predominantly white state. Like...Vermont.

Or Ohio.

New Hampshire.

Wisconsin.

30. Yea, but thats irrelevant. There is what Texas is and then there is what "Texas" means.
Texas the state is changing into something quite different than what the stereotype of Texas means (in a symbolic sense) to the average American mainstream.

We are talking about the myth of Texas, those "traditional" values, that white cowboy attitude, that Rick Perry/George Bush kind of swagger, that "Don't Mess with Texas boy" way of looking at things, versus, the mythical Detroit, that urban poor, dirty, broken, racially diverse (racially unpure), Mecca of all of "liberalism's failures".

Of course I don't mean either of these places should be subjected to such lowly and prejudicial descriptions. But if you can put yourself, for a moment, in the mind of someone like Newt Gingrich and the kind of mental midgets that follow after people like Newt Gingrich and consider what Texas and Detroit means to someone like that, then you can clearly see the racially charged culture wars bullshit completely in play there.

35. Can you humor me for just a minute?
Let's pretend that Obama isn't black and Newt makes that same statement.

Is there any other reason for associating a president with Detroit?

Oh....like maybe...the auto industry bailout?

It might surprise people to know that there are STILL Republicans who would insist it was a horrible idea. That it did nothing to help the economy. I know a couple personally who feel that way...

37. I think you're reading a great deal in to this
Texas is not a euphemism for white.

Nor is Detroit a euphemism for black.

Likely he just picked two places with radically different policies and successes. Texas is to the right and is doing pretty well (compared to most other states at the moment). Detroit is mostly to the left and is not doing well.

From now on white sales, white knights and white winter wonderland will be called Texas sales, Texan Knights, and Texas winter wonderlands.

Likewise black humor, black swans, and black and tans will be referred to as Detroit humor, Detroit swans, and Detroit and tan, respectively.

33. I think I was pretty plain above...
That if Newtie was actually as racist as people want to believe he is, then he would have wanted the whole country to resemble a WHITE state.

Not a state where whites are in the minority. Like...Texas.

Do you know what the white vs Mexican population is in Texas?

36. OK, here's what it was in the 2000 census...
Texas 2000 population of Texas: 20,851,820 (2000 census)

Rank Ancestry % of Population
1. Mexican 22.6
2. German 9.9
3. African American 8.7
4. Irish 7.2
5. American 7.2

http://names.mongabay.com/ancestry/Texas.html

Not really complete because it doesn't seem to be including Native Americans, who may or may not be classified under the "American" heading. I'm thinking maybe they are. So non-white people would be about 38%.

But anyway, my point is, if someone wants to imply that he can make the entire nation look like Sweden, he's not going to pick a state with lots of "minorities" living there.

people are leaping to the conclusion that "texas" is some new white power codeword and then substitute states with a minority population that is essentially a rounding error.

Klan rallies have more ethnic diversity than Vermont.

11. You mean with the highest rate of medically uninsured in the country?
The 6th highest poverty rate (highest rate of any non-rural state)?

The lowest percent of residents who have a high school diploma?

With a state budget problem of the magnitude of California's?

Some more facts about Texas:

from http://www.window.state.tx.us/comptrol/wwstand/wws0512ed/
•Texas is #49 in verbal SAT scores in the nation (493) and #46 in average math SAT scores (502).
•California has nine nationally recognized research institutions; New York has seven; Pennsylvania has four; while Texas, the second most populous state in the nation, has only three.
•Out of Texas’ 145 public and private higher education institutions, only one private institution, Rice University, ranked among the nation’s top 50.

from http://www3.dbu.edu/jeanhumphreys/juvenile/texasprisonrates.htm :
"If the state were a country, it would have the world's highest incarceration rate"

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/execution/readings/texas.html
"Texas executes far more people than any other state and is doing so at a pace that has no parallel in the modern era of the death penalty in the U.S. "

So this is what Newt's utopian society is like?

17. The movie version would be called "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas"
Theme song for Newtie's campaign:

"Sneakin' Around" by Dolly Parton

I like fancy, frilly things
High heeled shoes and diamond rings
Rag time bands and western swingin'
Sneakin' around with you
Well I like beer and rodeos
Detective books and dominos
Football games and Cheerios
And sneakin' around with you

Sneakin' around with you
Goin' around or two
Doin' what lovers do
Whenever they're sneakin' around

I like lots of cash on hand
And dirty jokes about the fuller-brush man
I like stuff I understand
Like sneakin' around with you

You know, I like a thrill that has no strings
Friendship that don't ever change
And laughter from the joy of things
And sneakin' around with you

I like drive-in picture shows
Kissin' long and lovin' slow
Secret places lovers go
Whenever they're sneakin' around

Ooh I like the crazy things we try
And the sexy things we fantasise
Just makin' out in the broad day light
And sneakin' around with you

<2nd Chorus:>
Sneakin' around with you
Keepin' it all brand new
Gettin' the best of you
Whenever we're sneakin' around
Sneakin' around, that's all
I'm gonna lay down the law
Watchin' her rise and fall
An' lovin' our sneakin' around
We're just sneakin' around
Aw, we're just sneakin'

44. Newt, Texas is The Last Picture Show, buddyroll.
I just crossed Texas from just west of Shreveport to just west of Amarillo. I entered Texas on I-20, then cut up through Greenville, Sherman, Gainsville, and Wichita Falls (where I spent last night). Today I did Wichita Falls to Amarillo on US-287, and Amarillo to the New Mexico State line on I-40.

I saw a bleak Texas of closed strip shopping centers and impromptu flea markets on the roadsides. My NUVI GPS, recently updated, sent me to restaurants that are now boarded up and for sale.

Newt's friends live in River Oaks and Highland Park, so he has no clue. But that's ole Newt. Dumb as a damn newt.

However, I did find a diamond in the Texas rough today. I got off I-40 near Vega, Texas, looking for a bite to eat. At the intersection of the old Route 66 and US-385 I found a most wonderful restaurant: Boot Hill Saloon & Grill. There I had the best burger and fries I have ever tasted. Period.
