I think we should have a Facebook section in Groups. Hear me out
Edited on Mon May-16-11 08:06 PM by LaydeeBug
I know Facebook annoys most of you. For me, it has been a wonderful networking tool, and as the resident liberal, sometimes my wall becomes a political stomping ground.

Of late, I have been posting when I get all upset (for lack of a better word) at the rantings and the status venting that goes on in these partisan times. I was going to give up on posting any politics at all, until I realized the reich would have won in some small fashion if I did that. And then something shocking happened....

I flipped one.

Yep. I didn't mean to, I had no idea he was even paying attention to my board, or wall, or postings, or whatever. He hadn't even participated in any of those discussions. He is my best friend from childhood's husband. She is my bestie emeritus, making him the bestie-emeritus in law. I have not seen her in more than ten years. We chat, we e-mail, we mean to get together, it just never pans out, as she lives more than four hours away from me now. I tell you this so that you know that it was not some immediate influence. AT ALL. He was so far right wing that he had piccies of W in his office, where in his spare time he would buy and trade civil war guns and (mostly) WWI & II weapons on ebay. He has a day job, but I digress...He e-mailed me to tell me that no one gave Obama a chance on the economy and that if his party "can't unite behind the slaying of that terrorist OBL, there's really no help for them. You speak your mind, and stand your ground, and after all these years, you have made a believer out of me". <<<<--------It's like I was in the TWILIGHT ZONE, you have noooooooo idea!!!!

What I have come to realize, in helping other friends with their own liberal discussions, etc, is that is easier (maybe just for me, I dunno) to make the argument when you're a bit removed from the situation (meaning it is easier for me to debate a stranger than to debate my crazy Uncle Lenny).

So that's it. I flipped a rightie and didn't even know it until he told me. How many out there can we reach if we help weach other out? you know we are not good at a unified message. Maybe this could help? I dunno. But I flipped a rightie on fb, and I get a lot of my stuff here.

Those sons of bitches better realize we are not afraid of the fight.

edited for a typo

3. I don't care about your virtual farm, or your virtual life
Real progressives like to function in the here and now, and in reality.

See? It's ALREADY WORKING. LOL

10. You can block those apps.
I'm shocked when I visit some friends walls and there's all that crap on it. They seem otherwise rational, and since I've blocked that farmville crap I only get their sane posts on my feed.

7. we are fools to not use facebook and twitter to teach our friends and family!
how else will they learn? the media is slanted so unless they are political and seeking information they are only hearing one side of the story. I facebook post every article about crazy taxes, attacks on kids/education...any article that I think any mom would think is bad for kids. Nobody wants to be grouped together with people who attack special needs kids and kindergarteners.

8. I agree but didn't always feel this way....
Remember when Twitter got popular and there were DU posts about it? Well, I was one of the who-cares?

Lots of RWers and Liberatians out there but more often than not, most of us want the same things.

Anyway, I rationalize that anyway of communicating ideas and information that usually isn't reported via the M$M is a good thing.

9. They don't say it's attacking special needs kids, they say, "addressing our fiduciary responsibility
to our citizens" and "stopping the teacher profiteering off of babysitting" for the kindergartners. I just love beating them with their own stick. "Hey, shouldn't the responsibility to our citizens involve investing their rehabilitation rather than paying for full time institutions? Which one would cost the taxpayer more over time? and "I guess you want the kids in Communist china to have a head start on American children in their education. Well I love my country, and I think WE should be first".
