Women:What Do you Think of Arnold's Other Woman?
The arrangement between Arnold and the staff person involved seemed very convenient. She kept her job,
pretended the kid was her then husband's, conveniently retired with a severance package after Arnold finished
his term as governor and could "confess" with the appropriate apologies?

I wonder how she could look Maria in the face in all the twenty years?

1. How could Arnold look her in the face for twenty years?
He is the adulterer.

13. Exactly! The "other woman" didn't take vows with Maria...
Arnold did.

And who knows the particulars of the affair?

Maybe Arnold promised her all sorts of things to keep her quiet.

Maybe he threatened to destroy her life if she told.

Nobody knows.

2. He and the other woman are equally at fault.
Poor Maria. It's too bad that she couldn't have walked away from a bad marriage and saved herself more years of misery...

fall apart.

16. They had children, it's probably a lot harder to walk away when you want
to try to preserve the marriage for the sake of the children. Another factor is that Maria is Catholic, isn't she? Catholics believe very strongly in intact families and don't believe in divorce unless there is pretty bad abuse going on.

My guess is that she was willing to tolerate his cheating, for the sake of the children and for the sake of keeping the marriage intact, but having the public learn that he fathered a child with this other woman was just a little too much and that was it.

I know I'm in the minority on my views, and I know I'm going to be (probably deservedly) flamed for my views, but I've come to believe that infidelity does not have to mean a divorce, necessarily.

I think there is great value in an intact marriage. I am coming to believe as the Catholics do, that marriage is a sacrament, and a real blessing. I think if people divorce simply because they are sexually bored with their partner, or even divorce for isolated acts of infidelity, they are not taking into account the great value of shared history, of stability for the children, etc.

For me, my husband would have to be outright abusive for me to ever leave him. And for the record, he's a real prince and I thank God every day for him. If I learned he had an affair, I'd cry, sure, but I wouldn't leave him.

I've been watching what divorce does to children. What divorce did to the family I grew up in. Not just one divorce, but the constant chaos of multiple divorces, in the case of my father. (He beat his wives when he would get drunk. He could be very charming and had lots of good qualities, so women would marry him, but after the marriage he'd take off the "nice mask" and the women would eventually leave because, I mean, you can't stay with a guy who beats you regularly, you'd end up dead one day from it.)

Divorce generally isn't good for children, unless there is abuse in the marriage and divorce has to happen for safety reasons. And this is really going to get everyone mad at me, but I think it's better if one of the parents can stay home with the children when they are young. I just don't think the babies and toddlers are getting as much attention and interaction as they need in some of the daycare centers. I don't think they get the same level of intensive, interactive care they would get from a parent.

I've spent some time trying to see the point of view of some social conservatives. I think a lot of them are seeing the harm that has come from promiscuity, drug use, divorces that maybe didn't need to happen, from losing a time when a mother who was middle-class usually stayed home to raise the children. I think the social revolution that happened in the 1960's brought some good things and some bad things.

I don't know, I just think I'm seeing a lot of signs of distress among our young and I wonder what is wrong and how to fix it. I just feel deep down something is really wrong and it's going to get worse.

17. My guess is that she didn't divorce him because of the affair or child...
but because he kept it quiet for a decade more than likely after continually swearing he had nothing else to tell her after their many arguments which probably consisted of "Is there anything else you need to tell me, because if you hold back now and I find out later there will be hell to pay."

34. no. it's Arnold's fault.
He was the one that broke trust with his wife, not the woman. Hers is a separate story she has to deal with, with her husband.

sick of people blaming the woman - like the poor little guy whats he supposed to DO! after all he a red blooded penis wielder, it's only natural to give in to those magical evil powers of women.

his fucking fault.

38. She did take vows with her own husband.
She broke those. In the wreckage of her own marriage she can have 100% of the blame.

It's not like she was unaware of the fact that Arnold was married. Unless she can offer up evidence that he threatened her or her livelihood, which is possible; in the wreckage of his marriage she gets 50% of the blame.

42. I agree. Unless she was an economic slave (as you say, possible) she had a choice
and she made it. I'm sure she saw dollar signs when she got pregnant and then carried it through. She knew at the end that she would see a payoff. I don't think she cared at all about him. Which is good payback to him, since he probably didn't give a hot damn about her and whatever happened to her...

15. Cause He Knew He Could Get Away With It...
Seems like a common thread in the too many men (and women) who decide to look for a little "extra". In their minds they have it figured out and justified. They're sure they're soooo smart that no one will catch on or that people will look the other way cause that person is so "special". These thoughts are generally made with the wrong head and thus they get sloppy or just plain stupid and the affair gets exposed. When things do blow up and lead to a divorce or nasty break-up I've heard too many still attempt to justify why they did it.

In Ahnuld's case, money and fame have a way of making many look the other way. As the "star" and later the "guv" he had a lot of people reliant on his success and in a large degree this included Maria. I've always sensed they had a marriage where their careers took a precedence until Maria had children and that their relationship was a complex one. It was a case of opposites attracting...but it also served each well in enough areas to look the other way. Now that Ahnuld's no longer "on the rise" politically, moviewise (he's 60-something) and otherwise his ego must be a bear to deal with...and since he's no longer the meal ticket he once was, the dirt comes out.

I don't judge when I hear these things...relationships have many sides that are only known to those who are involved. But I still find it sad when a relationship blows up. I wish them all the best...

40. Power As An Aphrodisiac...
My bets are in the 70s and 80s his "conquests" rivaled Wilt Chamberlain. Shallow and gratitous...and certainly something that had no emotion and lost any feeling over time. I always saw Ahnuld's "settling down" as a career move...especially into the Kennedy family. Surely his testosterone levels remained high...thus I'm not surprised he had an affair. I'm betting we'll hear of many over the years as the "cone of silence" from his power has been removed. Ya didn't see the "best boy" get their "helmet shined"...the fame and the name surely made his opportunities, even while married, flowing.

That said, over the years I did see a true friendship between Ahnuld and Maria which IMO is the most important part of any long-term relationship. If a relationship is based predominately on sex and not much else, it's an empty one and bound to fail.

Cheers...

35. Just wondering...
does that include all lies?

For example, wife says, "Does this dress make my ass look fat?"

Hubby thinks it does, but says it doesn't. He hasn't told the truth. He has lied to his wife.

That makes him an inveterate liar?

Not trying to be a pain, just trying to clarify whether your statement includes ALL lies, or just some, and if only some, what kinds of lies are OK.

39. That's the part that bugs me most
People are not perfect - both men and women have affairs and their relationships (marriages or not) may or may not survive. But I cannot fathom living in a house with a woman with whose husband I am carrying on an affair. I'm sure Maria also spent time with this child completely clueless that it was her husband's. That is just beyond despicable. She could have at least had the decency to quit her job after she realized that she was pregnant. It's not as if she needed the money. I'm sure she was well paid for her silence. I think this woman is worse than Rielle Hunter.
