It follows discoveries of the heavy metal cadmium in rice, toxic melamine in milk, arsenic in soy sauce, bleach in mushrooms, and the detergent borax in pork, added to make it resemble beef.

More alarming still was a study by researchers at Nanjing Agricultural University that estimated a tenth of China's rice may be tainted with the cadmium, a heavy metal that can affect the nervous system. This caused a stir when it was published earlier this year in the pioneering Caixin magazine.

Many wary consumers choose to buy foreign products, which are seen as safer. But this is also vulnerable to mislabelling. The Fruit Industry Association of Guangdong province told reporters this week that "most 'imported' fruit are grown in China".

In case you are not aware almost all apple juice comes from China it is merely bottled or canned in the US or Canada.

Not all out-of -season produce comes from Florida or California.


BTW - the local strawberries I buy have a shelf life of maybe 3 days before mold appears. The ones shipped cross country from California and Florida don't have this problem. You may think moldy strawberries area problem. I remain suspicious of strawberries so poisonous that a simple life form like mold can't survive on their surface!

3. I read every label and I do not buy food made in China. The apple juice I buy has a huge American

flag on it and says "Made with Apples Grown in the USA." IIRC (I don't buy it often), the brand is Indian Summer.

I just wrote Mott's (1st Co. that came to mind) after reading their FAQ, where their apple juice comes from. They state that their apple sauces are made from NY state apples but nothing about juices.

Also ran a Google search and TreeTop was one company that used Chinese apple concentrate.

I'm beginning to think no such list exists, it's just left to the consumer to try and find the country of origin stamp on the bottles or cans.

Sad that we import so much but I guess that's what globalization is all about. Corporations first, public safety last.

25. Less than 42% of apple juice here is from China and must include

labeling if it is. China is the number one world supplier of apple juice concentrate but not within the USA.

Apple Cider is fresh and local (not from concentrate by definition).

Why would anyone put anything from China in their mouth?! Between tainted milk and tainted pet foods, it's crazy to still be importing any food from China. And yet...

It was like a 50% salt solution with no discernible taste.
