My room mates notebooks anti-virus program won't allow access to DU
Yesterday, I tried to get on the DU on my room mates notebook. It's a rather small machine, something called 'Eee' and she received it as a gift from her sister to keep in touch. She has got it hooked up with a wi-fi connection, and frankly, it is so fast that I even thought of buying one as a backup for quick internet. That is, until I tried to navigate over to the DU and was greeted with the message that "Trend Micro Security considers this site to be dangerous" and said that it was a "fraud and a scam". This is the virus protection that comes with this notebook, from the manufacture. My room mate says that she is "very concerned that her notebook seems to have a political agenda". Needless to say that I will not be buying this device.

1. Why doesn't she delete that software and
download either Microsoft security center (if its a PC) or Malwarebyes? I've used both those programs and they both work really well.

2. I'll let her know about those.
She's not exactly computer literate, and sometimes, I'm not even sure about computer things. I mostly rely on the nice young man at Staples to help me out. Besides, it's her notebook. What concerns me is that this program is from the manufacture, put into a device that is only $250.00 in price and will be the only device that a lot of people can afford.

8. The Microsoft Security Essentials isn't free
We just tried to get a scan after downloading this program and then before it would fix any problems, it wants a registration form filled out which includes a credit card number and a billing of $29.95. That is not free.

12. I typed Microsoft Security Essentials into the address strip
She downloaded it from there. Did I just make a big 'no-no' on her notebook? We placed this into the trash.

15. If you didn't give them any cc info, I think you're probably safe.
I hate the scanners that download for free, but need some money to clean up what they find. Yeah, like I really believe their shitware found a virus. I'm guessing you got to one of those sites instead of where you intended. It's a scam, but generally not deadly to your computer.

17. We dumped it into the trash right away. Didn't give out any CC info.
Think I'll empty her trash now.

16. There's a lot of convincing looking ads for antivirus software that are scams
I think, unfortunately, you ran into one of those. The scam ads force you to pay money for software that is totally ineffective and worse yet, infects your machine with a virus and/or "trojan" (a virus that "phones home" to a nasty server to steal your information off your hard drive or turn your machine into a spambot machine).

11. You've got a star, the OP doesn't. My guess is it has something to do with the ads.
Maybe the OP could try a different browser, like Firefox with adblock, and see if that solves the problem.

13. Could you please explain how donating or not on my computer
Edited on Tue May-17-11 06:04 PM by icymist
affects how my room mates notebook works? Really, I wish I had the money to donate, but I don't. I barely get by with what little I do make. Anyway, how in the world would having a star by my name make someone on a different computer have a better run? I'm not trying to make trouble, but think this is a legitimate question.

14. Some ads contain malware--for example, malware that can
Edited on Tue May-17-11 05:54 PM by tblue37
hijack your browser to another site (and maybe do other enfarious things, too!). So the antivirus program won't let you access a site with ads of that sort.

If you donate a little, though, you will get a donor star, and no more ads. That's a win-win.
