Duncan Hunter criticizes Navy's decision to name ship for Cesar Chavez
San Diego area Rep. Duncan Hunter criticizes Navy's decision to name ship for Cesar Chavez
May 17, 2011 | 1:21 pm

Rep. Duncan Hunter. U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine) disagrees with the Navy's decision to name a cargo ship under construction in San Diego for California farm labor leader Cesar Chavez.

The decision, announced Tuesday, "appears to be more about making a political statement than upholding the Navy's history and tradition," Hunter said in press release.

Hunter, who served as a Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan, said that if the Navy wanted to recognize "the Hispanic contribution to our nation, many other names come to mind."

Hunter mentioned Marine Sgt. Rafael Peralta, killed in combat in Iraq and nominated for the Medal of Honor. ...........(more)

1. I don't see a reason to name a navy ship after Chavez either, to be honest.

Was he a big militaristic guy? I doubt it.

3. True. It just doesn't seem like Chavez would have been a militaristic type.

20. He did serve in the Navy for two years.
To be fair, however, he did say he hated it.

10. Ahhh....I didn't know that. Good move by the USN, don't see why Duncan Hunter Sr's a-hole son is
complaining other than that he's a racist.

8. From Wikipedia:
"In 1944 he joined the United States Navy at the age of seventeen and served for two years. Later, Chávez described his experience in the military as “the two worst years of my life.”"

So, he was a WWII Navy vet who later became a major civil rights and labor leader.

I'm good with it.
