No. I do not think that the currently predicted End of the World will happen today - at least not in the sense these religious nutters (I apologize for being tautological) mean - but The World WILL End Today for thousands of people.
You might be one of them. I might be one of them. No one knows - certainly not these sign waving folks.
Worlds do end. I work in a trauma center. Every day I meet people whose world did end this day: Either because they are now flat-out dead, are paralyzed, legless, or simply smashed beyond recognition and even after months and years of pain will still never be the same.
Did this story have a happy ending: Out of the pre-dawn mist hanging over the quiet stillness of a Texas lake burst a high-powered ski-boat with Bubba, Bubba Buddy and Budweiser?
Neither Bubba, nor Bubba Buddy expected that day to be the end of the world. But, for them, it was.
We do live in Perilous Times. Perilous Times because of the growth of unreason, superstition and fear mongering as we slide and are pushed into a theocratic police state.
We never do know when our world is going to end ... only rarely do we know when OUR Last Day is upon us. Each day is then precious - for it might be our last. Just as life is precious, because it is the only one we are going to get.
"Judgment Day" - in the Abrahamic sense - will never come. But we should use judgment on how we use each day we have. I know that I have wasted more than a few - and you can never get them back.
So I am going out for a walk under the just lightening sky. I will look up at the planets rising in the east against fading stars while our own star rises to light our world.
