2. "Some guy" should tell it to Consumer Reports, who only measured 34 mpg.
That "some guy" gets around, though, I'll tell ya...

3. That's totally meaningless. He could have reset his MPG
at the top of a mountain and coasted down. You can reset the readout at any time and all it will give you is an instantaneous reading.

10. Same thing here.
I have an s60 which never does better than 26 in the real world but I crack up whenever idling down a hill and it shows "99".

Edited on Wed May-25-11 09:16 PM by TheDebbieDee
on the MPG gauge, it starts at 99.99 mile per gallon and slowly counts down to what the actual current MPG for your car.

My Fusion needs tune-up and is only getting about 20.0 MPG.

6. Wife has a Volvo S40 with a guage like that
It's readout tells you what mileage you are getting at that particular instant in time. It is quite easy to get it to read a momentary number like that, like when coasting up to a stoplight for example. Overall her mileage is closer to 30 mpg of course. I'd like to know if that mileage is accurate, and if it is over a significant period of driving, or what.

15. exactly. I have that on my VW diesel. it's shown as much as....
160 mpg

that's when I put it into neutral on the highway at 60 mph

totally meaningless

I have gotten over 60 mpg for stretches of 20-30 miles, and have averaged over 50 for several hours (from Dayton to Point Pleasant)

daily driving...between 35-40 mpg, depending on temperature>>>> 5 mpg less during winter

27. In a TDI, you burn more fuel idling in neutral than you burn coasting in gear
with your foot off of the go pedal. The computer does not send fuel unless the pedal action calls for it - no pedal press, no fuel pumped. In neutral, it burns the fuel required to keep the engine idling. This is for manual transmissions, or course. In a TDI saddled with a slushbox you just get worse mileage period.

32. then why do the RPMs decrease substantially in neutral?
what you say makes sense.....but:

I shift into neutral and coast to stop signs, as well as coast whenever practical, and RPM decrease is in the range of 20-40% less whenever I do that. doesn't that translate into less fuel consumption?

I also put it into neutral at lights, and there's no difference in RPMs between that and keeping it in gear....it always decreases in MPG when I sit there, regardless of gear (about 2 MPG/minute)

I drive about 11 miles to work every day; about 5 highway, and the non-highway mileage seems about the same, whether I neutral coast or not. I'm obsessed with mileage (not that it manners money-wise....I'm just cracked), but it's impossible to tell which way is more efficient because I don't drive that much.

what I do know is that it takes about a half hour of highway driving to reach max mileage, AFA what the gauges tell me....low to mid 50s, depending on flatness of terrain

34. That's not how it works.
When your transmission is in neutral, the engine is disengaged from the wheels. The only thing that keeps it running is feeding it enough gas to maintain idle RPMs.

When your transmission is in gear, the engine is directly connected to the wheels. The momentum of the car keeps the wheels turning and thus keeps the engine turning. Unless there is a need to speed up, you aren't feeding gas to the engine.

With an automatic transmission, when stopped (in gear), the transmission "slips" (a poor choice of words, but essentially accurate), fighting against the force of the brakes. You are still burning gas to keep the engine running. At road speeds, there is no slipping, so engine speed and wheel speed are directly related (unless changing gears).

The key here is that RPM and gas consumption don't correlate. Gas consumption is based on the need to produce mechanical energy (to speed up, to climb hills, to keep the engine from stalling while in neutral, etc).

36. OK, thanks. now.....does it do any damage to the engine/trans to put in
neutral all the time, in any particular speed range (mostly approaching lights/stop signs)

7. OFFS If you fill up and run downhill
your mpg "average" will go off the dial. Until you actually have to use the engine. My gas station is uphill from my house. My prius will routinely get 99.9 mpg. For a while.

8. No big deal
Don't know how long a distance the average is taken over, slope, tailwind, or speed. There are better sources of car data than Consumer Reports, IMHO.

20. I haven't seen one at a dealership yet. This year they
put the hybrid in the Lincoln MKZ at no extra charge, supposedly you can get one for about $36000. The catch is they load them down with every other option pushing the price well over $40000. There is no problem finding a hybrid Lincoln.

29. I have a 2005 Mercury Sable. Sometimes when I press the 'reset'
on the MPG reading it will go over 60, and slowly wind it's way down.

Going down a bridge in cruise control (essentially coasting), I've seen the MPG read as much as 50.

I think the photo is meaningless.
