New Texas law mandates sonograms before abortion
Texas Governor Rick Perry on Thursday signed into law a measure requiring women seeking an abortion in the state to first get a sonogram.

Under the measure, women will be offered the option of hearing the heartbeat and seeing the sonogram image, which they may decline. But the woman's doctor must describe the image, explaining the size of the embryo or fetus and the presence of organs and limbs.

in 1972, a young friend of mine got pregnant and decided on an abortion. Her family had to drive her from Texas to California to have it done. Years later, in 1983 I had an abortion, right here in Texas...legaly. We had come that far.

In the years since, I have campaigned, voted and stood guard outside of Womens Health Clinics to ensure other women (my own daughter included)have that same right. Now this.

I see us loosing footing in this fight, and sliding backwards instead of forward.

FU Goodhair.

3. looks like it'll be rolled into the total cost to the patient. Here's the part
that really irks me.

-This important bill will ensure that every Texas woman seeking an abortion has all the facts about the life she is carrying and understands the devastating impact of such a life-changing decision.

-The law also requires women to wait 24 hours after the sonogram to have an abortion, unless they live more than 100 miles from an abortion provider. In that case, they have to wait two hours.-

Sooo, a woman who lives close to a clinic needs more time to think about it than someone who lives farther away??? She has to take off 2 days work because of her location? Why not give all women the 2 hour limit?? WTF?

I call Bullshit! This is just another trick up Goodhairs sleeve to appease the right-wingnuts.

4. Who will pay for the sonograms
and the dr. visit? I hope the woman will not be responsible for the added cost.

Furthermore if the anti-choice folks believe it's necessary to 'educate' woman about the fetus, then included in this legislation should be information about the dangers to the woman herself in carrying that fetus to term.

Whatta bunch of knuckleheads these people are. BTW where are the jobs? I thought that most of them ran and won on a jobs and economy platform.

8. Just to clarify - it's the type of sonogram
A doctor must perform a sonogram before each termination to determine how far along the woman is. Doc can't just take her word for it. What's at issue here is that it will be vaginal (except for those who were raped, incest I believe). Also, the doctor has to describe any limbs, heart, etc to the woman. It's just another way to shame women. Not sure if they still have to listen to how an abortion causes breast cancer...
