Police: Man Twisted Pet Bunnies To Death - Charged With Child Abuse, Animal Cruelty
Police: Man Twisted Pet Bunnies To Death
34-Year-Old Charged With Child Abuse, Animal Cruelty

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- A Central Florida man faces animal cruelty and child abuse charges after authorities said he killed three baby rabbits.

Winter Haven police said 34-year-old Reginald Owen Sear Jr. got into an argument with his wife Tuesday over who was supposed to feed the family's pet rabbits.

Police said Sear took the animals' cardboard box into the bathroom and killed the baby bunnies by twisting them.

The couple's two young children didn't see the animals being killed, but authorities said they saw blood on their father's face when he left the bathroom. Police said it was so traumatic for the children that Sear was charged with two counts of child abuse, in addition to three counts of animal cruelty.

5. If his wife doesn't leave him
She's a lunatic.

I am so tired of animal abuse and child abuse, and this case is both. I hope his children never have anything to do with him again.

7. On tv that is the way they always kill rabbits. What if he had cleaned and cooked them?

Personally I'm a vegetarian and I think we could do with a lot less animal killing. That being said there seems to be an awfully confusing level of hypocrisy over this. On man v wild or some crap they said that breaking the neck by twisting was a relativity humane way to go about killing rabbits (doesn't mean it isn't bullshit just food for thought.)

8. Do you wear leather?
Have you ever personally benefited from someone that went fishing or hunting? If so, welcome to humanity, enjoy your stay as a human being. If you think the answer is no, then you probably aren't from planet Earth.

This was an act of cruelty, specifically designed to upset the man's kids and wife. The rabbits didn't ask to be pets.

9. No I don't eat or wear animals. I'm very carefull about the products I use
and I have never had fish or meat so you would have to tell me how I personally benefited from someone that went fishing or hunting.

I am from the planet earth as far as I know and I know plenty of vegans who go to even farther lengths then I do to avoid animal products and they all seem to be from the earth too.

So the difference is that these rabbits were pets. If they were right from the wild it would have been fine, but since since they were pets it isn't?

I know more then a few people who raise rabbits or chicken and treat them as pets, but occasionally harvest them.

It seems to me that a pig with a very high intelligence level being butchered would be more upsetting then far less intelligent rabbits being killed. (of course rabbits are cute)

10. That's not going to make it as an argument
unless your own mother never ate meat, either. Face it - in our history, human beings are omnivores.

I lived with a vegan, too, so I'm not in any way unfamiliar with the lifestyle. The reason why I bring it up is because you suddenly decided to be sanctimonious and accuse meat eaters of being just as cruel as this person.

Which, of course, is bullshit, and you pretty much know that.

See how all or nothing philosophies - and particularly judgmental ones - get torpedoed? Hell, I doubt even my vegan ex would have reacted the same way you did to this article, which is with anything but horror, and more "Oh well, that's what all of you shameful meat-eaters really are at the core!"

11. You don't want to argue but you have no problem putting words in my mouth.
I never "accuse meat eaters of being just as cruel as this person." In fact I never even accused this person in question who is innocent until proven guilty of being cruel either.

What I am literally asking is why do I see this whole bunnies getting twisted until their necks snap to kill them on tv all the time if it is animal cruelty. Did the guy in question kill them the wrong way, are they wrong on tv, what is the right way to kill a rabbit. I don't see why that is considered sanctimonious when this guy faces jail time over this issue.

On a side note both my parents were actually vegetarian. Obviously I have plenty of ancestors that did eat meat and who's lives depended on it, but that is rather indirect and impersonal, not me benefiting personally from someone hunting or fishing.

12. My apologies
I guess I did jump to a bunch of conclusions.

For the record, I love animals, but I also have lived in the South where hunting and fishing are common. I also like to cook, and meats are my specialty.

I apologize for flying off the handle at you - it really wasn't an appropriate venue, and I hope you will overlook my mistake.

15. Well you just proved yourself to be one of the classier posters on DU so of course.
I see where you could have gotten that impression, because I put in the I don't eat meat disclaimer, but in all seriousness my disclaimer was intended to stop people from accusing me of being blood thirsty for animals because of the question I was asking.

14. I lived in Florida for 7 years
and I live very much in the Deep South. That doesn't mean that we are all horrible people.

I know a few Texan liberals that are good people, too.
