Abortion victimizes

"Anti-abortion logic" (May 22 Letters to the Editor) brought up the topic of abortion in the hard case of incest. Even though less than 1 percent of abortions performed in Kansas are hard-case abortions, one must consider the worst-case scenarios.

However, the letter writer and like-minded people need to acknowledge that abortion never undoes the rape or the incest. Abortion only further victimizes the victim.

In the case of incest, abortion can protect the criminal father or stepfather, enabling him to repeat the crime, leaving a series of dead babies and subjecting the dependent young girl to long-term emotional abuse and possibly physical harm from the abortions.

It would be far better for all involved in rape and incest cases if the baby were put up for adoption (unless the mother wants to raise the child) and the criminal father were dealt with by the justice system. In a civilized society, an innocent person should never have to die for the crime of another.

I congratulate the 2011 Legislature and Gov. Sam Brownback for moving Kansas toward being a more civilized society.

MARK S. GIETZEN

2. sign the petition
Dear Kansas MoveOn member,

A few days ago, during a debate on a bill to ban insurance companies from covering abortion, Kansas State Representative Pete Degraaf said in a House debate that women should "plan ahead" for being raped.

Shockingly, he added that planning for rape is similar to having a spare tire on one's car. Rep. Degraaf's statement is a stunning display of Republicans' disrespect for women.

Rape is not like getting a flat tire—it's a horrific crime. That's why I created a petition to Rep. Degraaf and the rest of the Kansas State House, which says:

"Kansas State Representative Pete Degraaf said in a House debate that women should "plan ahead" for being raped and added that planning for rape is similar to having a spare tire on one's car. Rep. DeGraaf's terrible analogy is deeply offensive and disrespectful to all victims of sexual assault. He should apologize."

Will you sign the petition? Click here to add your name, and then pass it along to your friends:
