Eddie Long case officially dismissed

Documents were filed late Friday in DeKalb County Superior Court confirming the sexual misconduct case against Bishop Eddie Long has been dismissed "with prejudice," one day after it was revealed a settlement had been reached.

The dismissals, first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, prevent the four defendants from suing Long again for the same alleged offense.

Reaction to the settlements by current and former members of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church was mixed though most were relieved the case had been resolved.

Long, pastor of the Lithonia megachurch, which has an international following, ha denied the men's allegations through a spokesman shortly after they first became public in September and told his congregation he planned to "vigorously" fight them.

The accusations made against Long by Anthony Flagg, Spencer LeGrande, Jamal Parris and Maurice Robinson alleged that the bishop used his influence, trips, gifts and jobs to coerce them into sexual relations.

2. most civil cases settle out of court - and it's not a bad thing

If it goes all the way to trial you may lose or get much less than the last settlement offer. If an agreement was reached out of court then good... the plaintiff will be happy they got a settlement payment and won't have to face a trial where they may very well end up with nothing but fat attorney fees.

Civil cases are based on monetary awards as the only available recourse. What difference does it make if that money comes in the form of a settlement or a jury decides what it should be if anything at all? Most people are very happy to settle their case... they get a satisfactory amount of money and don't run the risk of losing at trial or being awarded less all while having to fork out a lot more money for the attorney.

This defendant needs to be in a criminal court for what he did. I'm guess there was no criminal proceeding because of some foul statute of limitations. I don't believe there should ever be a statute of limitations on crime, particularly a violent crime, and most particularly a violent crime perpetrated on a child. Statutes of limitations should be confined to civil matters... nobody should be able to get away with a crime merely because they were able to run out the clock.
