Former Walmart workers sue after being fired for stopping robber with gun in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Six Utah residents are suing Walmart after being fired for disarming thieves.

KSL TV says three of the former workers stopped a robber with a gun at a store in Layton, Utah in January. The other three disarmed a woman who pulled a knife in a Cedar Hills, Utah, store on December 24, 2010.

Attorney Lorraine Brown says the lawsuit seeks compensation for the loss of career positions, emotional distress and humiliation. The lawsuit also claims their constitutional right to self-defense was violated.

Walmart spokesman Greg Rossiter says company policy prohibits workers from confronting people who have a weapon. It is a common policy to protect workers among retailers.

2. The correct response is clearly to give in to whatever the armed robbers want.

These employees did what they did in misguided, even if heroic, efforts to protect WalMart's property. That was foolish. WalMart is also being stupid in firing these people, punishing some rather extreme examples of employee loyalty. If I were a WalMart exec, I would publicly thank these people for going beyond the call, and then issue a statement that you don't want anyone else trying that.
