With Osama bin Laden dead and as few as 50 Al Qaeda members believed to be in Afghanistan, President Obama should start pulling U.S. troops out of the country this July, California Sen. Barbara Boxer argues today in the Los Angeles Times. She writes that we have to be realistic about what we can accomplish: “The notion that the United States can build a Western-style democracy there is a myth.” What we can do is support the Afghan military and prevent Al Qaeda from regrouping there. To achieve those goals, 10-15,000 troops and a targeted counter-terrorism strategy should do the trick, she says. And so, with an eye on polls showing 60 percent of Americans think the U.S. has fulfilled its mission in Afghanistan, Boxer has introduced a bill in the Senate that would require Obama to sign on to an exit strategy with a firm end date. “We have made progress on our core objective: crippling Al Qaeda,” she writes. “Now is the time for us to focus on that goal and finish the job.”
'For the U.S., it's time to get out of Afghanistan,' Sen. Barbara Boxer
