Blunt: Feds Should Pay 100% of Joplin Clean-up
In the wake of a tornado 'unlike any I've ever seen,' Blunt calls for unprecedented level of disaster recovery funding from the federal government.

While the federal government usually picks up around 75 percent of the costs following a federal disaster declaration, Sen. Roy Blunt wants it to pay more for the deadly tornado that ripped a path through Joplin.

Blunt said he is asking the federal government to fully fund the costs of cleaning up Joplin following the country’s deadliest tornado to touchdown in 60 years, during a media conference call held on Thursday.

Usually, federal agencies will fund around 75 percent of the clean up in a disaster situation, with state and local governments financing the other 25 percent.

“They’ve agreed to 75,” Blunt said. “I think they are going to have to come to a better number than that. The right number I think would be 100 percent.”...

5. Roy, I take it you'll be supporting a more equitable tax structure to pay for your demands?
Maybe now we can rescind those Bush taxcuts that are starving this country's ability to deal with disasters like this?

7. With no offsets or right to claw-back any waste.
Republicans are hypocrites. It is ok when organizations that deal with disasters and that work to prevent them have their budgets under constant scrutiny even after those budgets are cut to the bone. But when disasters strike their districts, they want those agencies and the federal government behind them to ignore all else and solve distress in their districts. Myopic, self serving bastards. One can only wonder whether the disasters in the south and Texas have not caused voters to wake up to how republicans have used their votes to gain power to coddle the rich and screw everyone else.

8. Dear Roy,
Edited on Sat May-28-11 10:28 AM by Drahthaardogs
It appears in the midst of the disaster you have not been following the literature put out by your party. Let me explain, you see feds who help out with FEMA are overpaid, fat cats. Plus we are incompetent. Also, FEMA is not PROFITABLE, and as your friends in the GOP keep saying "if it is not profitable, it is not good for the country". Sorry... we cannot help. What we really need here is some small business and some open competition. Yeah, that will fix it. Let's get the government out of FEMA Roy and get some good old American small businessmen down there. It will not be free, but government is evil, and I am sure with lots of competition, your state can get a "good" price, if the market allows it that is. Because as well all know, price fixing is not the venture capitalistic way. You should call Mr. BONER *sic*, he will explain this to you in detail.

Signed,

Your friendly but woefully overpaid and terribly inadequate federal employee and FEMA volunteer

9. Gub'mint is the problem, Roy
Do you really want people showing up saying "we're from the government, and we're here to help"?

Maybe if you give the Kochs a few more billions, the "Invisible Hand" will have it all spiffed up in no time.

10. 100% only for those with less than 100k homes
and 10% for those with homes over 100k but not over 10,000.

Actually, I say they it should not be over 75%. Missouri should offer the other 25%. Or make sure homes don't get damage. :sarcasm:
