JOPLIN | As many as 142 people may have died from the Joplin tornado, state officials said this morning, while state troopers have been working around the clock notifying families of victims who have been confirmed dead.
The number of dead is uncertain because the temporary morgue is working to identify bodies that include partial remains, Missouri Department of Public Safety Deputy Director Andrea Spillars said.
As of 11 a.m. Saturday, the state had notified family members of 48 people who died whose identities had been confirmed, she said.
Officials have also reduced the number of people reported missing to 105, down from 252 a day ago. That 105 includes the names of nine people who families members believe died in the tornado, but whose bodies have not yet been securely identified in the morgue.
