Mixed feelings on a personal level
My sister's son lives with her out in Arizona. He's an adult, she was living with a girlfriend. None of them has much money and her son was sort of wasting away last year down in Florida where he was essentially a slave to his alcoholic and deranged father. So I sent the boy the money he needed to pack up his stuff into a rented trailer and for the trip to get him out west with his mother. That was last winter. Yesterday we found out he was hurt in an accident. He's been into racing dirt-bikes for years so we figured that is what it was, and indeed that proved to be true. He broke both legs and one ankle. So I'm worried as hell about the boy, and my sister too. I know the don't have a pot to piss in and this could be real bad. We just got good news though. It turns out the boy got a job back in April and luck on top of luck, medical insurance came with it. Now the mixed feelings. The job he got is with Halliburton. What can I say? Thank goodness they give employees health insurance.

1. Keep us posted. Don't be surprised if the insurance scams are just...
...starting.

Dropping coverage...

Paying wrong deductible (always in their favor)...

Not covering consults...

Not covering some tests...

They're masters at criminal behavior.

2. Working for Halliburton is a great job! Good for him.
No corporation passes the smell test here anyway. They are all rotten greedy bastards.

3. Gotta agree. Would it be any better if he worked at Wall mart or
Kentucky fried shitcan? How about Chase or B of A? Face it, they all suck and if you can derive ANY good from them, more power to you.

13. Do you really think people here would see no difference between...
...working for, let's say, HP and Monsanto?

There's "inevitable level of evil" and "evil above and beyond the call of duty".

4. My STBX worked for Bechtel for years. It was a damn good job
and he was treated very well--and his work ws appreciated.

He worked in their IT division but the check said "A division of Bechtel."

It wouldn't be #1 on my list in terms of ethics to work for Halliburton, but I wouldn't automatically cross them off, either. One's safety and health matter--a lot.

7. I'm sorry, but IMO there is no excuse for working for those fuckers.
I would rather starve to death than work for them.

8. Hey, no sweat. This young man must do the best for himself that
he can. They did not hire him to run the company, and he does not run the place (yet) so he is only responsible for earning his paycheck, and benefits. And enjoying it without remorse.
He is not, in any way, shape or form responsible for everything the company does.

at least one good person is working there and getting something from them. I don't think you should feel anything but relief.

11. There are those who claim they would rather starve than work for company (insert any name)
Edited on Sat May-28-11 08:26 PM by Obamanaut
but when it comes to the actual starvation, I think it would be an empty boast and would soon be overcome by a desire to have a full belly.

He has a job and insurance. All good.

12. Well I see it as balancing the karma for Halliburton
They may be sleazy as they come in some things, but they do good in others. It means that at least they do some stuff that creates good karma.
