Peru's Ollanta Humala has a narrow lead over right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori.

Ollanta Humala, 48, comes from a left-wing tradition of greater state intervention. He staged a short-lived rebellion against Alberto Fujimori in 2000 and narrowly lost to Mr Garcia in the last presidential election in 2006.

He campaigned on a promise to increase the state's role in the economy and redistribute wealth to Peru's poor majority.

1. Good news, because Keiko could pardon her dad if elected.
That's not a good prospect for anyone.

2. Keeping my fingers crossed for a Humala victory.
I suppose it will be many hours before the official tally is known since the BBC numbers are based on exit polls.

3. Getting odd reactions from my liberal Peruvian friends
One just told me it's the worst thing that could happen to Peru. I wrote back to ask by, but I don't have an answer yet.

4. First official results

Madamu Chu speaking as write this with 12,618,534 votes counted (out of 20 million).

Humala 50.087 percent

Keiko 49.913 percent

Madama Chu = Magdalena Chu, head of national electoral tribunal, of Japanese ancestry, same as Keiko.

Going to be a nailbiter.

6. Sounds like Humala won? I haven't heard a definitive vote count yet, but BBC
radio seemed to be calling it for Humala last night.

7. It's still at the level in the BBC report from about 5 hours ago: 50.7% v. 49.3%, 80% counted
Humala has declared victory, and that seems far more likely than a late surge from Fujimori (she'd need to win 52.8% of the remaining votes to overcome his lead). Unless there's a reason to think the areas that haven't yet declared would support her more, then he should be OK.

8. Ollanta Humala Wins Peru Election Over Keiko Fujimori

<snip>
Ollanta Humala has snagged Perú's presidency, outlasting Keiko Fujimori in a bitter battle that went down to the wire.

Humala, 48, a leftist former army officer with questioned human rights credentials, won Sunday over Fujimori, the daughter of the country's disgraced ex-president. He went over the top after softening his radical image and disavowing the affinity for Venezuela's socialist President Hugo Chávez that fueled his defeat five years earlier.

Fujimori promises Perú's poor a greater share of the Andean nation's considerable mineral wealth and pledged in victory to honor the free market but put Perúvians first.

The former army lieutenant colonel won 51.5 percent of the vote against 48.5 percent for Keiko Fujimori, according to complete unofficial results compiled by the independent election watchdog Transparencia.
