They have convinced them they are middle class.
This is as "old as the Conservative Movement".
I can remember stories just a few years back. They went something like this. Small town in let us say Ark. The President of the Rotary Club considered socially the most "important" with power, person in the town. He earns 37 thousand dollars a year. One of the highest salraries in the town. Socially he is one of the top jobs. Kerry has said he will raise taxes on the rich to pay for something. Because the guy is socially on the top rung, he believes and NO ONE CORRECTS HIM that he is going to have his taxes raised.
People have conflated rich and social status.
That same year, ABC ran a program. The guests were at best working poor. The highest salary was 20,000 for a family per year. The called themselves middle class. It appears there is a social stigma in being "poor".
Of course, the Republicans want you to believe you are less than if you dare apply for assistance.
