Teachers are human. Stress kills...and makes a person sick. This is what is happening everywhere in public schools...and it helps NO ONE. JMHO.

Now... several of the absentee teachers have been out with long-term illnesses, which skews the numbers significantly. It's also the case that some of the teachers are out on approved training days.

But it's also true that teachers are quitting at very high rates and calling in sick with far greater frequency than you would expect (and much more frequently on Fridays).

It's clear that there's a great deal of "bad blood" still there.

Reportedly, over half of the kids had at least one subject on their report card that did not receive a grade because they didn't receive enough instruction to warrant grading in that subject.

This surely isn't helping the kids.

How many parents of those kids made them do their homework? How many of them showed up to parent teacher conferences? How many of them value education in the home and emphasize that to their children?

Where is the accountability for them?

5. I agree the parents have a critical...

...role and responsibility in their child's education...and not all parents live up to their responsibilities. I also think there is a difference between deliberately choosing to be irresponsible and not having the skills or means to fulfill responsibilites. For example, many parents attend conferences, but lack math or language skills to help their child. Some parents never attend conferences because they don't care. Many families want to attend conferences and can't get off work, or have no transportation (this is where poverty hurts educational success).

Many families I know, who value education and want to help their children lack skills and support...that doesn't make them deadbeats. OTOH, the deadbeats need to be held accountable too...and they do exist. :)

10. That's probably what most of the sickouts are doing

If you don't want your employer knowing that you are interviewing for other jobs, you call in sick.

And the irony here is that the best teachers will likely be the ones to leave for other jobs, while the crummy to mediocre ones will stay.
