Former Gitmo Commander Subpoenaed in Spain over Prisoner Torture
Democracy Now! Guests:

Andy Worthington, journalist and author of the book The Guantánamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America’s Illegal Prison. He is co-director of the film Outside the Law: Stories from Guantánamo.

Katherine Gallagher, senior staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Protests are planned at the White House next week to mark the ninth anniversary of the first transfer of foreign prisoners to the U.S. military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Meanwhile, the Center for Constitutional Rights filed a request Thursday asking a Spanish court to subpoena the former commanding officer at Guantánamo Bay, Major General Geoffrey Miller, over the alleged torture of four Guantánamo prisoners. Last month, the CCR also asked another Spanish judge to prosecute six former Bush administration officials who authored the legal memos authorizing the torture of foreign prisoners.

I would love to see Major General Sadistic Bastard in the dock:

Geoffrey D. Miller (born c. 1949) is a retired United States Army Major General who commanded the US detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Iraq. Detention facilities in Iraq under his command included Abu Ghraib prison, Camp Cropper and Camp Bucca. He is also famous for training soldiers in "improved interrogation techniques".<1>

1. Oh those Spaniards!
Lookin' to the past, when they should be lookin' to the future! What's the matter with them? Don't they know we're fightin' a war on terrorism or something? Why don't they like authoritarian and draconian solutions?

I wonder if anyone will grow weary waiting for justice, and decide to exact a little righteous revenge on the United States for its crimes outside a judicial system with rules of evidence and procedure? What form might that sort of justice take, since we are unwilling to undertake it ourselves? I hope anyone who does that targets the guilty exclusively, and doesn't just take out any Americans they can get at. I'd hate for me or my loved ones to be killed or maimed because of crimes of others.

2. I just read an article about journalists being killed in Honduras
and how the golpista government has asked the US and Colombia and Spain to "help" them investigate.

Now, the coupsters started kidnapping and torturing journalists to dissuade them from reporting the coup. We learned about it here really early as DUers were on the ground. The US and Spain aren't going to "find" sh!t because they were both complicit. Colombia actually exported right wing paramiitaries to serve as mercs for the coup. Honduras is now the most dangerous place for journalists in the Americas.

My point is, the next big terrorist attack we have could just as easily be Catholics from Latin America for all the horrible stuff we're facilitating in Honduras and Colombia.
