Millard Fillmore born January 7, 1800

Daguerreotype by an unknown photographer, taken c. 1855, in Wikipedia (Public Domain)

Millard Fillmore, 13th President of the United States and patron saint of mediocrity, was born near Buffalo, New York, January 7, 1800.

Fillmore was never elected president. He was elected Vice President on the Whig ticket headed by General Zachery Taylor in 1848 and succeeded to the Presidency upon Taylor's death in July, 1850. Prior to his election as Vice President, Fillmore was a New York state politician who rose to the lofty office of state comptroller.

As President, Fillmore signed into law the five acts that comprised the Compromise of 1850. One of these acts admitted California (the center of the universe) to the union as a free state. Another was the Fugitive Slave Act, which stands with the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act of 2006 as among the most odious pieces of legislation ever enacted by Congress.

1. A fairly useless president, I believe he later ran for president again
in 1856 on the "know-nothing" ticket.
