take us to war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Because of this our image has certainly been damaged in the eyes of the more moderate segment of the Muslim population world wide. We have given them reason to question our motives and this will most assuredly damage our national security in the long term. Our actions have only served to reinforce the words of extremists that wish to do us harm.

So yes, government officials can certainly damage national security.
